Ever Had a CHEAP Knife You Really Loved?

I was prompted to ask this after seeing the thread about the best knife you ever lost. Well, I haven't lost any knives that I didn't later find...except a very small knife I've carried for about eight months.

It all began when I bought a Fenix LED from Brightguys.com. Just before checking out, I saw a promotional offer. It was a small, sexy little framelock knife that went for five bucks IF you bought one of the Fenix flashlights, so I bought a few for giveaways. After using it for a few months, I found that I really used the knife a lot. It had a very sharp tip that made removing splinters a breeze. It also had a nearly flat cutting edge, but it arched just slightly, pushing the point down and away. It wasn't a hawkbill, but it was thinking about it.

Anyway, I lost it. I'm sure it's clipped somewhere where I've forgotten about it. Perhaps to a pair of pants I've packed away for the season. Or maybe it slipped away whilst I contemplated the mysteries of the universe. Whatever happened, I had to search through my knives and flashlights until I found a spare. But am I glad to have it!

It was so cheap, I really shouldn't have spent the better part of an hour searching for it. But cheap knives can grow on you. Or sometimes they can jump ship.

Have you ever had a cheap knife you loved? Or at least liked a lot?

A cheap knife, but it was very useful...and sheeple friendly. This one is
Ultrafire, but it's the same knife.

Have I ever had a cheap knife I loved? Hell, cheap knives are all I own! :D It doesn't take a week's pay to get a good knife.

When I turned 40 I sold off all my expencive knives like my customs and high end productions. For the past 20 years I've been very happy using sak's, case sodbusters, Opinel and Mora's.

Theres something carefree about using a knife you can replace for the price of a couple of beers!

My Subcom is easily the most I've ever loved a cheap knife. I have sold knives that cost ten times as much, not kidding, that I didn't like anywhere near as much as my Subcom.

Right now I've been pleading with my girlfriend to give it back to me. I've bought her a pink Leek and a pink Delica in an effort to get her to let it go.

Moras have become one of my favorite knives. They are certainly my favorite cheap knife.

Amen, brother! I sold my Randalls when I was about 45. :D You know what I like now, same as you plus some older CS.

Bad picture of a great knife. This Midnight Manager 2 rides right front pocket everyday! Its just a tad thicker than a Classic. I use it all the time.

A Gerber LST, followed by a Gerber EZ-Out. Both are from the days before Gerber's stuff started to royally suck. I lost the LST, I still have the EZ-Out. It's one of the pre-skeletonized ones with the kidney shaped hole, and the blade is marked "450 Stainless". I outgrew it for reasons other than its edge. I never had the lock fail on me, but now that I realize it has no liners, I marvel at that.

It's pretty hard, I used the spine a couple of times to steel my sexier (but frankly less useful) AUS-4 M16-13z, which I also still have and loved until I bought my current EDC, an Endura 4.

Looking at them side by side now, it's hard to believe I used to think the EZ-Out was prettier than the Spydercos, but I did. 'Course, my excuse is that I was 18 at the time.

Looking back I guess the EZ-Out would fit into this catagory. I used to think of my EZ-Out as being expensive, then again I think I was about 12 when I bought my first one. Other than that, I'd have to vote for the Husky box cutter. Cheap, maintenance free, I carried one for about 9 months and beat the crap out of that thing, but it never failed me :) I still use it for odd jobs around the house that make me cringe at the thought of using my griptilian :barf:

It's been quite a while, but I still love a 4" Paragon Cobra clone I bought for about $12. The steel's OK, 440A stainless with a not-too-bad heat treat ... takes a real nice edge, and what it lacks in retention, it makes up in maintainability.

I did take it down to the shop for a little adjustment to the fit. For $12, it's a real user, not a shelf queen. Biggest drawback is that it's an auto ... I hope I never get caught out with it, but I'm too old to be taken for a punk by the LEO's.

Does a Spyderco Dragonfly count? There are many more expensive knives out there.

Sure....I love the Buck 110 and Victorinox SAKs.
I also was very fond of the Gerber Gator years ago.

I love my Opinel. I've owned several and carry one every day in my work bag. But I don't get upset or emotional when I lose one; with a great big smile I order a new one.

My little Rough Rider Peanut.

It's tiny , it looks good , it was like $15 , it takes a great edge ( impressed me on how long it actually held the edge ).

My Opinel number eight sees as much or more EDC than my Delica 4. So yeah, I love my chep ole' Opinels!

Try the #8 Opinel "garden knife" next time around. I like the spear point blade, and the handle is the most comfortable of all.

I bought one of those 'no-name' china made POS's from a gas station, on a road trip back in 2000, only because because I'd left my old Buck 110 at home. The POS turned out to be my EDC for several years, mainly because if I lost it, I was only out $8.

thx - cpr
