Ever had a knife forcibly taken from you?

I'm fortunate to live in a state that has zero knife laws, however I frequently go to Boston so I have to be mindful of what I bring when I cross the border.

That being said, I've never had a knife taken from me.

February 1979-Isfahan, Iran-Lot of civil unrest/street riots/burning cars etc. Police roadblocks and fundamental Islamic gang roadblocks. Bell Helicopter employees/Americans stuck waiting for flights out. I had carried my Buck 110 for 14 months in-country with no hassles but the popo's pulled my jeep over in a traffic circle roadblock and had me and my partner face down in the median. Searched the car and us. Took the 110 but left my pepper spray when I pantomined spraying it under my arm like deoderant.Carried that spray all the way to Athens, Greece before it was also confiscated.--Good old times!;)--KV

I don't travel. I've never been out of the United States (even though I've lived in San Diego for 43 years, I've never crossed the border into Mexico). So I have no personal experience with foreign laws or law enforcement. But I tell ya, some of the things I read here on Bladeforums really make me appreciate living in the USA. Here in urban San Diego (California) I have openly and legally carried a ten inch fixed-blade everywhere I go for several years. And despite the fact that many cops have seen my knife, not one has ever hassled me over it or said a negative thing about it. The only time A cop ever said anything about it was when the bottom of my jacket accidentally covered the knife, thereby making it illegally conceald, and the cop just gave me a quick and friendly warning because he didn't want me to get into any trouble. He didn't take the knife from me, not even for a second. Nor did he ask why I was carrying it. And he didn't even ask my name or ask for my ID.

California might be pretty unfriendly to gun carry, but most of the state is really liberal with many types of knives. I used to carry my Maxx 5.5 all over town with no issues. LA county has a 3" length limit, but at least you can still carry at all.

I used to end up south of the border with a buddy of mine now and then (he's got family down there) but I wouldn't bring any knives with me, just in case. I'd love to travel to Europe sometime and when I do, I plan on just buying a knife after I reach my destination, or at the very least, studying up on what type of blade is legal to carry before I bring anything along with me.

Someone tried once. I still have it. No one was badly hurt.

Other than that, I've been lucky to live and work in pretty knife-friendly places, and by following the rules, I've avoided any trouble. I EDC a 4" fixed blade (open carry), and/or a 3-5/8" blade folder (either in my pocket or in a belt pouch).

I had the police take my Camillus fighting knife the one that looks like a kabar usmc fighting knife by the police here in my home town once, I had been doing something that required a fixed blade. Can't remember exactly what it was but I had the knife in its sheath in the back of my suv waaay out of reach, well at the time, My wife and I were just dating and her brother was a dope head and we didn't get along too well, so i dropped her off after our date, and that punk ***** was outside drinking and smoking pot, he kept trying to pick a fight with me and I wasn't wanting to back down from him as I was just outta basic training and had that I can whoop the world attitude, well a neighbor of my wife now ,heard us arguing and the police came , the neighbor had lied and said that I had thrown they guy on the ground and choked him out etc... Not true we just had words, when the cops arrived he was arrested for public intoxication and possession of marijuana , They asked to search my truck and I said sure with a smile as i presented my drivers license and military I.D to the officer thinking he would see I was just home on leave and tell me to have a good night, not the case he put a gun to my head and told me to exit the vehicle, he then handcuffed me and threw me in the back of his cop car, he found that kabar, and said oh what do we have here why do you need this, I explained that I had needed it for something previously in the day and pointed out it was in the very back of my suv way out of my reach, And that it was for doing a choir that I wasn't carrying it as a weapon, that I didn't need a knife for protection, well as I was about to go to jail the rest of her neighbors came out along with my wife now, and told the officers the same story , that her brother had kept trying to pick a fight with me and yea we exchanged words but I didn't do anything. The cop finally uncuffed me, and told me thanks for my service but that he was gonna haft to keep my knife, guess he needed a new fixed blade. Funny thing is he got fired about a year later for assaulting a minor the minor was doing donuts in his car in an empty parking lot the cop stopped him took him out of the car like he did me , but he smacked the kid around a little bit in the process, too bad the kid was in his parents brand new corvette and the dumb cop didn't think why's a kid in a brand new vette? answer.... His parents were lawyers so he lost his job...Believe he did jail time too, I saw him a few years later and he was no longer an officer , I told him what i thought about him and basically asked him if hed like to go somewhere private that I remembered Him and his attitude and him taking my knife, And that if he wanted to go a few rounds to meet me at this place... He just kept on walking and I keep on taunting I know it was immature But I wanted to whoop his ass so bad, but he just backed down time after time, he eventually got killed working on the railroad. I guess Karma is real, that sounds harsh but I can write a book on some of the stuff this guy did to kids , he assaulted more than a few of them , took bribes he was a crooked as the letter C.

I really dislike how police generalize knives as weapons like its illegal to carry them, or how some act like you must be insane for carrying one. (which I find facetious because the officer has a Sig Sauer P226 strapped on his hip at the time) I remember getting stopped and illegally searched about two years back, the cop asked me to remove my knife from my pocket and set it on his hood. Yeah okay. Lets get this over with.
I remember it was my double edged 3 1/2 inch stiletto automatic otf and I was lucky he was fair, and only gave me a warning not to carry.
Nowadays, I'd just flat out refuse a search. Honestly I am just tired of archaic knife laws. A knife is a knife in my opinion, it shouldn't matter how it opens or blade length. Same with the semi-recent nitpicking about 30 round magazines. It is just there as a cocblock to discourage firearm sales (IMHO). Why would you ban the 30 round mags when there are higher capacity magazines than that readily available to the public market?? Don't tell the fuds that but..
Banning a particular magazine isn't going to stop the wackadoos that shoot up schools So what is the point?

I guess what goes around comes around, and when it does  I have mixed feelings about police. That being said there are good cops, and there are bad cops. It is best not to hassle them, because for the most part, they are just trying to make it a safe place for the public..

I live in SC, no one bats an eye at knives, or guns in the car. Not as sure about open carry. I try not to spook people, but sometimes I rock a belt knife along with my folder.
