Ever had an AO knife open unexpectedly?

Wondering about this.

With all the posts here on BF, IIRC I've never read one where an assisted opening knife - any good brand - opened unexpectedly.

I bought my first AO about 8 or 9 years ago (a Kershaw Whirlwind), and have
gotten several more AO's since then. (BTW, one of my favorites is the Camillus Heat.) And there are some new ones out that have really caught my interest.

So I would just like to hear if anyone ever had the experience of an assisted opener opening when it shouldn't have - meaning when you didn't initiate the opening with thumbstud or flipper or whatever opening system the knife has.

Well, if I flip my Leek in the air and catch it the blade can move forward a bit because of the force, which sort of risks opening it, but it has yet to open that way (that can be fixed by tightening the pivot screw, I'm sure).

Also, carrying tip up with it I've had the thumb-stud catch on a loose thread in my pocket, and that flipped it about halfway open, but since the thumb-stud was caught I couldn't get it out of my pocket for a few seconds (It probably would have opened all the way if it hadn't gotten stuck).

Other than that, they're pretty darn safe.

EDIT: I should mention I carry my knives on the clip, not loose in the pocket.

I had a Paragon ATKO-3 open in my pocket once. I got a small cut on my finger when I reached in my pocket for it. Luckily, no big deal.

Razor sharp Kershaw Blackout. Cut the pocket and my hand when I reached in to pull it out. Tightened it up, but have never trusted it again. Bill

I've had my DDR GH open in my pocket while trying to pull it out before but I think the flipper got caught on something when it happened. Doh.

When you reached in to pull it out, was it clipped to your pocket?
Maybe one of the studs snagged on something?

I guess you would have mentioned it...

I was running one day with my Kershaw Chive and it opened while in my pants. I don't think this is the knife's fault since it did have an extra lock, but I didn't use it. On another note I have had a CRKT M-16 open in my pocket, since it was loose enough to flip open, it would not stay close (I did "modify" it a little)

OK, well based on these posts AO's can and do open unexpectedly.
Not very often, though.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I had my Chive pop open a bit in my pocket a couple times and considering how sharp I keep it: I couldn't help from getting the willies. That's when I'd actually use the lock on them.

Never accidentally opened on me since i always use the blade lock when i carry the knife (kershaw Leek 1660st) around.
