Ever had an AO knife open unexpectedly?

i had a bm 520 mel purdue (blade tip up) open once. i stuck my hand in my pocket and realized something wasn't right. the blade had swung open about 45 degree angle the edge facing up, blade pointing, well lets just say almost went from a bull to a steer. i now prefer knives with clip allowing blade to open towards pocket seem.

My kershaw chive opened in my pocket once. Never carried it again after that. It has a lock on it. But what is the point of a quick opening blade if you have to disengage a stupid lock each time--ultimatly making the quick opening feature dangerous or useless. I prefer a knife with some thumbstuds and I just flick it open with my thumb. Opens just as quick and is much much safer=)

This is why I never liked the "safety feature" of assisted's being tip down. On a normal liner lock, sure, but those?! No way, tip up for me thanks. Rather have it open into "wall" of my pocket than my leg, or other things!

My Camillus Heat opens when I drop it on a hard floor (which has happened enough times that it embarrasses me).

They're a lot of fun to play with, to flick...the feel of the spring (bar, whatever) kicking in is really terrific.

But I wouldn't carry one as my main EDC unless it had some kind of lock to keep it closed, as some of the Kershaws have.

Just my personal view, my .02; I know that lots of people love 'em...

With everyone having had AO knives open in their pocket why carry them? It seems like having to engage a second lock goes against the ease of AO. Seems like too much of a gimmick to me.

I've dropped my old blue Bump and had it pop open. In the middle of the street onto concrete. Suckage.

my old flash II never opened, but a crapy old switchblade would open all the time in my pocket. the lock didnt work and i couldnt give up the "cool" factor of it. thank God it was dull.

My SOG trident has a safety on it but I never use it. I've never had it open in my pocket accidentally and I've tried to open it by dragging the studs on the corner of my jeans...no luck. I don't see this one opening accidentally any time soon.

Accidentally? No. Unexpectedly? All the time. I like to play this game with my Kershaw Chive (the AO function on this knife is very snappy). Lay the knife on its side; open the knife just enough to let the spring slowly creep the blade open, move your hands away, then wait. Five seconds, ten seconds, fifteen seconds… THWACK! The blade suddenly snaps open. Very fun, and not something to do at the dinner table.

Another game I’ve been experimenting with is to launch the knife using the AO mechanism. Hold the knife halfway open with the spine of the blade on a table, compress the spring just enough that it still wants to open quickly, then let go.
My buddy has a Blur and the handle is too heavy on that knife, but the chive works well.

Enjoy. :)

I reached in my pocket to get a pencil out in a college classroom when my Kershaw Whirlwind came out with the pencil. It landed on the floor and opened with a loud wack for all to see. There was almost a sheeple incident.

My Kershaw Chive opened while I was carrying it IWB (a scar on my belly that lasted for a couple weeks could testify it has a sharp tip) :o My fault, I should have used that safety :thumbdn:
