Ever had guys with knives want to borrow your knife?

For past few months a guy I know has been pretty vocal about his new EDC. Inlayed Large MagnaCut Sebenza 31. He paid around 800€ for it and is carrying it with pride. Uses every opportunity to show it to me too. Talks to me how light it is for the size. How easy it is to take apart and put back together for maintenance. How well it carries. How smooth the action is...

Nothing wrong with him being proud of his knife.

But today he asked me if I can borrow him my Recon1 to open a blister pack... while I could see the pocket clip and end of his Sebenza handle sticking out of his pocket. I'm confused. I just told him "No". Then he found and used scissors.

Then I remember my previous coworker who always carried and often flipped his Benchmade but I never seen him cut anything with it. And I remember him asking for my K390 Endela to cut zip ties. I also said no and he used utility knife.

What's the big idea with it? I just don't get it.

And they don’t know how to sharpen it after they use it.

I have knives I don’t use, but I don’t carry them. If I’m carrying it, it’s going to get used.

I wonder if people have knives they can’t afford. They had the money to buy it, but if they are afraid to use it then they really couldn’t afford it.

But to answer the original question no noone has asked to borrow my knife.

It reminds me of people who have jacked up monster pickup trucks and have a panic attack if they see any dirt on it. 😅

If the only reason they want to borrow your knife is because they don't want to abuse their own knife that's a big no. As it is, whenever someone asks to borrow a knife I ask them for what and will usually cut something for them. There's a reason why I keep a bunch of cheap knives around the home and sheds.

I am happy carrying and using knives in the sebenza price range

Happy to use them for all i need to do

But

Gotta admit once or twice when im carrying a new fancy knife i have gone and got an older user to cut something… but that user is still a sebenza! The first cut is the hardest!

And

I was once new to expensive knives and would hesitate to use them

I found the solution to this to be - i always buy a backup…

So maybe your friend just needs 2 sebenzaS

And this is something my partner just refuses to try to understand unfortunately

Carrying your own knife and wanting to borrow someone else’s is a big Party foul 😆
I don’t even let anyone use mine 9 out of 10 times I’ll say no. I will offer to cut something for them and always ask what they want to cut.
You’d be surprised what they might want to use it for I had one guy say he needed to pop some staples out 😳
The OP you speak of probably doesn’t know how to sharpen a knife and part of the reason he’s afraid to use his .

If I know it's someone who has a knife they use all the time, but it's just dull or something, then sure. Might even offer to sharpen their knife for them.

But even in that situation I'll usually ask what they need it for and do the cutting for them. I've had too many people destroy a fresh edge on one of my knives doing stupid shit..

In work if I get asked for a knife I'll dole out a fancy folder box cutter ~ My off work carry ( the good knife ) stays in my tool box.

Sometimes I carry my Damascus Sebenza if I need it out it comes and I have used it to open boxes and cut starter cord rope and fuel hose ~ I'll stop at trying to pry a valve off or use it like screw driver ~ Every tool has a certain purpose I see no reason to deliberately wreck something

Spending almost 800€ on CRK in latest and greatest super steel and then asking for me to borrow you my Cold Steel that costs fraction of the price for opening a blister pack is just kinda crazy to me.
And after I said "No." - he went for the scissors and used that.

Sadly, he does know to sharpen. He is just scared to use something that's "The best EDC ever" according to him. And ironically he tells me I need one too... yeah and to still keep carrying Cold Steel too, so I have something I'll actually use...
