Ever had guys with knives want to borrow your knife?

Yeah man. I'll let anybody use any of mine if they ask. If they had a knife on them, I would silently lose any and all respect as I pass mine over. Then they'd likely receive a box of extra large tampons for Christmas.

Haven't experienced something like that. I'm in Europe also and most of the time I'm the only one around carrying a knife (and Leatherman Wave in my backpack (and sometimes a SAK too (and maybe a fixed blade if I'm feeling like it))).

It depends a bit on the knife. This also impacts my choices on carrying super expensive or fancy knives. On the one hand, I get using a Sebenza or something as a powerhouse work knife. It's made for it. On the other hand, I think twice about cutting things that are sandy or really dirty with even a nice budget knife. I'd much rather be doing beater tasks with a piece of 14C28N or whatever with a comfortable handle.

From my experience, neither opening blister pack or cutting zip ties are beater tasks, yet these people asked me to borrow them my knife while they themselves had knives already.

I put my Recon1 through a lot (as evidenced by photo I put up there).
I mean, handle is really good. Steel (S35VN) is average, not crazy tough, not crazy stainless and won't hold the edge for eternity either. Blade geometry is what it is, better for some tasks and worse for others. Triad lock is awesome. I like using that knife and that's all. It's not made to be a pretty knife or collector's item. It's made to be used and that's the beauty of it.

What I have is a knife caddy. He follows me about with a large bag of knives and I'll say something like this lie calls for a Sebbie ( I use a lot of nicknames so it seems more personal) and he'll hand one over.

I know a lot of people call them "Squires" but I don't want him getting delusions of grandeur.

But no safe queens.

I have an Elk Mountain scene CRK lrg Sebenza that I hardly carry…mostly fear of loss, and I carry a benchmade or recently a ZT and may lend a knife to someone depending on who it may be. My two closest co-workers carry a knife each and never ask to borrow. I do have a utility knife on the back of my service truck which I use for many cutting uses and will gladly lend it out. One time many years ago, a co-worker knew I owned some rimfire handguns and asked me if he could borrow one for a weekend camp trip with his gf….I just told him point blank- no, I do not lend out my guns- to anyone ever. He was butthurt but got over it-probably.

image.jpgI carry a Victorinox beater in addition to my nice knives. That’s the only loaner. If it falls down the gutter I’m out 25 bucks. I don’t even get upset. If you can’t cut something with that, let me at it.
I don’t loan my GEC, Spyderco or my Tactile Dreadeye.🤓

Smart move! Good way to avoid being charged as an accessory to homicide when gf doesn't come back from camping trip. 😉

And I like the "let me do to you what you're trying to do to me" swapping idea.
" Sure, you can borrow my knife if I can borrow your wife/gf/partner/lover/etc". 😉😉
That's a joke, in case you missed the winkies. I'm not advocating disrupting anyone's relationship, especially your own if/when your spouse/partner finds out what you said.

And they don’t know how to sharpen it after they use it.

I have knives I don’t use, but I don’t carry them. If I’m carrying it, it’s going to get used.

I wonder if people have knives they can’t afford. They had the money to buy it, but if they are afraid to use it then they really couldn’t afford it.

But to answer the original question no noone has asked to borrow my knife.

I'm not sure whether or not it's about affordability. A lot of people just hesitate to use their "really nice" things like they should be used, in general.

That’s kind of my point. Really nice, is relative to how much of a stretch it was to buy it. If you had to stretch so far to buy it, you’re afraid to use it, maybe you really couldn’t afford it.

A billionaire could break a $500 knife without a second thought, it would be like us breaking a Stanley utility blade.

Yep I’ve had guys ask to borrow my knife when they have their favorite edc on them. I look at the pocket clip, laugh, piont at their knife and ask them if that’s a knife or a fashion statement. Then a big NO follows that question.

I know it’s because they can’t sharpen worth a crap and don’t want to dull theirs and don’t want to put in the time or effort to learn how to get a good sharp edge. Some folks always want the easy button.
