Ever had to use a knife in a self defence situation?

Right on victus1 and lasersailor184!!!! We live in a sick sick sick society, where what was considered wrong for thousands of years has been turned into right (by some). Now we have people believing gays should be married and criminals should be protected from their victims. What could be more sick, twisted, and perverse?

I don't care one iota about a criminals' life. I don't pick fights with people and hence I am not looking for any fair fights. If I get into a fight it's because someone is trying to victimize me and I will defend myself with whatever means available. Usually that means a 1911 Kimber Custom CDP .45acp (I have a license) but I would not hesitate to use my knife if that was all I had. I've been in fights in my youth where the other person pulled a knife after he decided he was not doing too well but that usually lead to me bashing their head in with large rocks or bricks (weapons are everywhere if you know to look). The only living thing I ever used a knife on was a large aggressive feral dog that was attacking me, and in that case the Microtech Socom worked very well in my self defense (story in dog thread in tactical forum I believe).

Y'all do what you need to but I don't run (too old - 41 and a slightly bum knee from many years in the USMC) and I am prepared to do what is neccessary and can live with the consequences.

you sound like a guy who has a lowered honda :D haha, couldn't help that one. but seriously bro, i don't see how making sure everyone sees that you're packing a large blade in tough areas would deter the type of criminals who would attack a man.

well, in one case i was carrying a fallkiven odin and cuda maxx walking to my friend's apt late at night. it goes through a seedy part of town, usually bums walk up to you every ohter min asking for $ and there's like 3 muggings a night, nobody even approached me.

its not to deter people looking to influct bodily harm, its to deter the common street thug looking to make a quick buck and realizing that you're not worth the risk of a knife fight with a big knife.

However, a deadly force response should not always be excluded either. Both are preferential in different situations.

I do not value the life that tries to take mine, though. I can't afford to - I have only the one life; according to my religion, at least - yours may vary. I'll do what it takes to keep mine in the event it is threatened.

Quite possibly this is the wrong forum to ask such a question..there is a certain amount of (justifiable) peer pressure to act responsibly, to view knives as tools etc etc.
In addition, this is a highly subjective issue. I believe ones responses will vary with age and experience.
It would be most interesting to hear what some victims of real crime felt on this issue. But I doubt they will reveal themselves even if they are present, understandably enough.

I've been assaulted at least a dozen times. I grew up very poor, worked in bad areas, do some civil service work with the deputy's, and traveled/travel a lot. When you find yourself in a life-threatening situation your reactions will reflect your general mindset. You play like you practice, basically. Are you vigilant? Do you dislike violence? Do you practice martial arts or basket weaving? Etc. If you did not practice, prepare, or experience it, chances are you will perform poorly in such a situation.

Most persons first reaction is "Oh my god he's got a gun/AK-47/machete/knife/sharp stick!". Your first reaction should be "What can I do to quickly take advantage of the situation and resolve it with minimal risk and damage to myself and the lives of others". Until that is your first reaction, the criminal will always have the upper hand.

Having said this - I do what I can to avoid a knife fight(or any fight). Why? Because knife fighting is not fighting - it's combat. Once both of you, or more, decide to use blades against one another, chances are good one of you will die. Now, compare this to an armed response. In the 4 times I have had to display a firearm, I never had to fire a shot. A stern warning and a firearm was all that was needed to cause the attacker to back down or leave. This is infinitely more effective than any knife.

One time in central Texas I was confronted by 3 huge(or they SEEMED huge at the time) white supremists(I am Cherokee Indian). Turns out they brought bats to a gun fight. This helps to shine light on another point - if you are in a knife fight - assuming you are both similarly skilled, you are in a fair fight. As a Texas Sheriff friend of mine likes to say "A fair fight means poor preparation on someone's part".

As for the laws - those with confidence, self respect, and responsiblity rarely cry to their politicians/keepers for help. Thus, the laws tend to reflect the protective need of the weaker members in our society. While criminals generally get their comeuppance in Texas, one can understand how some yankee states are more afraid of hurting the innocent than punishing the guilty. No system is perfect, you have to assume some innocents will get hurt in the process of punishing many whom deserve it. Otherwise, you will paralyze any system, and make it ineffective.

I sort of see this like a pre and post 9/11 attitude towards highjacking. Pre 911, the MO for a flight crew and passengers being highjacked is cooperate. Post 9/11, I dont think that anyone in their right mind would cooperate with highjackers.

Same goes for weapons in SD. Alot of people who have never been victimized by an armed attacker feel that if you cooperate and hand over the cash all will be OK. Unfortunately this is not always the case. Many criminals have the MO that if they hurt the victim, it will interfer with the victims ability to ID them or even provide a rational report to the police. Does anyone remember the rash of carjackings in the late 90 (a country wide trend in bad neighborhoods) with the victims were being shot in the head?

Cooperation can get you killed, I for one will take my chances with fighting back. At least then I can stack the deck in my favor with proper training and tools and if I still get hurt, I get hurt trying. Beats sitting there like a cow at the slaughterhouse getting the hammer to the skull.

EDIT*forgot to answer the post question*
I never used a knife in a SD situation. Ive been involved in an SD situation.I had a few knives in my pocket but never reached for one. He didnt have a weapon, so I tried my hands first and it worked. It wasnt some "fair fight" type of feeling that made me do this. Only the thought that if I stabbed the guy, Id be the one going to jail.
I also hope to never use a knife in a SD situation. Same way I hope I never get a flat tire but still carry a spare and jack in my trunk.
