I got a batch of new belts and I swear they just don't cut! 120's 220's Klingspor belts and they cut like a worn out belt, and these were spank brand new. I am a stickler for using "new" belts for the most part, especially when working with metal. I will use my "used" belts for handle shaping, etc. My best knifemaking buddy laughs at me when I accuse him of trying to get $15 out of a $5 belt...he throws no belt out.
This latest event came when I was flat grinding some new 440C steel and the 120 grit and 220 grit just floated over the metal and took nothing off. Afterwards the grit still looked and felt brand new which was puzzling to me. The steel was typical 440C..had not been hardened, etc...came in the same shipment with the new belts...I don't know...just puzzled. I ended up cleaning the steel up with old 120 and 220 grit belts and they worked just fine.
What brands to you folks like? What cuts the best for you?
