Ever just sell off CHUNKS of your collection?

Sure, I've got a huge lot laid out now to thin out. For me the collecting or accumulation started and value purchases was one of the goals and still is to this day. But you do acquire lots of knives this way. Over time my tastes in knives have become more refined as my knowledge makers, quality steels, and other knife making materials has increased.

So, I've looked at the accumulated collection and have narrowed my collecting themes and raised the bar for what I want in an EDC knife. Being middle-aged I do like the classics. Last two knives I purchased was a 1989 Buck 505 Knight in Brown Picked Bone because its within my collecting theme and a damn fine knife produced in low numbers; and a Military Ti which will be part of my EDC knives.

So yea people who collect and accumulate do sell off as noone has unlimited resources and this hobby continues to present you will "must have" knives. The new ZT 550 and ParaMilitary II are good examples of knives that I will own if I have to start laying gold eggs. :)

In the end, the selling is also part of the fun of being obsessed with knives.

i feel fortunate that i don't have the "buy/try/sell" mentality.

If you know what you like and make good choices based on your preferences then you likely have all the knives you've bought for yourself. But the "buy/try/sell" strategy is an excellent way to limit overall capital investment into this hobby while getting to experiance a lot of different and exciting knives that present themselves each year.

I personally feel lucky to have the exchange forum here that allows me to sell when I feel the need or to buy at good price when I'm so inclined.

I bought a Military Ti from Reeek this weekend at a slight discount from what Knifecenter.com would charge. I saved about $15. But what I got from Reeek was the ability to look at detailed photos of this knife from every angle. An outstanding purchase opportunity.

I've been collecting knives for 17 years. My wants have changed and am looking to start selling my never-used knives. I carry knives I shouldn't just so people can see what I've got. I've never joined a forum until just now. Any recommendations regarding finding prices and/or best places to sell?

I cleared out most of my collection when I lost my job [got one now] so it was kinda fun sorting out the few keepers...*now* I feel 'less is more' and very much so.

Welcome to Blade Scotland,

The exchange forum is a good place to price knives. Manufacture forums like the Buck or Spyderco forum are good place to ask for opinions. But the best is to check the collectable catagory for knives on eBay.

Thanks for the welcome Flatlander. I've got a couple of late 80's Al Mar SERE's (the IV and VIII-A), an EK Commander (before Blackjack) and a Blackjack Tartan Dirk that I hope are worth something. I've found some info on Linder, Buck and Parker but I guess I just need to keep looking for my more expensive blades. I like that I kept the boxes and never used them (other than cutting me when I cleaned them) based on what I'm seeing on some of my sellable blades.

I now buy based on carryability instead of collecting. I needed a black knife to carry so I bought the Kershaw Leek w/ Damascus. I've been told that I'm pathetic to accessorize my knife with what I'm wearing so I make sure that it's a cool knife to justify why my knife always matches my clothing.

I guess this goes back to one of the original posts regarding quality versus quantity. What you want now versus several years ago changes which makes collecting enjoyable.

Thanks for the help. I'll check eBay to see what I can find.

It's like past relationships to me. I think I'm going to die when I try to end one or one ends on me when I didn't want it to end, but soon after, you forget all about them and focus on the future and present.

Holding a knife that I consider selling is like choosing between children (if you have any, I don't)

I went up to 60+ knives at one point then sold them all down to about 11 keepers. I'm back up tp 25 or so again. But like many relationships in one's life, I'll divest of more and acquire others.

I'm like the OP though in that I have really narrowed the knives I often carry just by shear happenstancial default and by virtue of those knive's attributes.

Ive sold a good chunk f my collection as well. I only like to keep users as well. I have been thinking of thinning my collection just to maybe 3 or 4 knives.
