Sure, I've got a huge lot laid out now to thin out. For me the collecting or accumulation started and value purchases was one of the goals and still is to this day. But you do acquire lots of knives this way. Over time my tastes in knives have become more refined as my knowledge makers, quality steels, and other knife making materials has increased.
So, I've looked at the accumulated collection and have narrowed my collecting themes and raised the bar for what I want in an EDC knife. Being middle-aged I do like the classics. Last two knives I purchased was a 1989 Buck 505 Knight in Brown Picked Bone because its within my collecting theme and a damn fine knife produced in low numbers; and a Military Ti which will be part of my EDC knives.
So yea people who collect and accumulate do sell off as noone has unlimited resources and this hobby continues to present you will "must have" knives. The new ZT 550 and ParaMilitary II are good examples of knives that I will own if I have to start laying gold eggs.
In the end, the selling is also part of the fun of being obsessed with knives.
