Ever kept all your eggs in one basket and lost everything?

I always have a knife, light, and some sort of firestarter on my person, even when I'm not hiking or camping.

Sort of. Once, my backpacking buddy sat his pack next to mine, and knocked mine down the hill. All we could do was watch it tumble end over end down the switchbacks.
This story might sound stupid but this very kind of incident actually happens pretty often. I've seen it happen myself.

Awesome stories, everyone. Gonna help me start picking up some good habits. I went through all my gear over the weekend and figured out what my essentials were. Going to try to find a way to keep them on me at all times.
The only tough one is water. Bottles get bulky and heavy quickly. I have a Camelbak but of course that goes in the backpack.. water is one of the things I'm most worried about losing.

There's really not much you can do about this, except be prepared to make potable water out of whatever you might find. That might include such simple things like chemical purifiers and knowing how make fire and boil water (even in a plastic bottle), but also techniques for filtering contaminated water. It's less difficult than most people know. The pocket SAS guide for example has detailed instructions. It's a skill you only need to try successfully once, and you'll never forget.
