Ever modify your pants to accomodate a knife?

Hi,

I can't find a really good spot for my EDC. Here's what is currently in my pockets...

Right Front - Wallet and cell phone - no room for knife
Left Front - Keys - don't want to scratch knife with keys
Left Rear - Pen and pad - no room
Right Rear - Empty - if clipped, I bend the clip

I would like to modify my pants and create a small pocket on my right side (strong side) on the outside of my leg - by the seam. I'm going to get my wife to try it on an old pair I wear around the house. It it works well, I'll get her to modify them all.

Has anyone ever done this? If so, can you post a picture? Any better ideas?

Thanks,

Kenny

Thanks for the idea, but I want something easy and quick to draw and something that isn't going to scare/surprise people.

I also just ordered a 705-401 and so I need to find a place to carry it!

thats what you have now.... how about trying this...

assuming your a righty...

Right Front - Cell phone in pocket, knife clipped to the side
Left Front - Keys, pen
Left Rear - Pad
Right Rear - Wallet

If we want to be a traditionalist... a wallet doesnt belong in the pants anyway. it deforms your pants. It should be in a jacket/vest.

You may also want to remove the pen and paper( thats so out of style :p ) and opt for a cell phone with voice recording ability ;) Cell phone could have a slim belt clip.. which would free up your pockets alot. Hope I helped!

why not wear a shirt with a pocket, or a light coat? Have a pda in my inner pocket on the light jacket I wear, fisher bullet doesn't take up much room in the pocket for an ink pen.

I'm rarely seen without at least a vest on, and the chest pocket on it holds my wallet and flashdrive no problem.

what about belt carry?

Vadim Grynko (goes by Vess on here) does a nice job for custom leather work.
Spydie frn endura on my left hip is in his work, and my wallet is a custom job from him. Holds 4 cards... have my ID, bank card and cash in it.

I always have on some sort of multi pocketed pants so I don't have to decide what to carry.

I think if you made a new pocket on the outside seam specifically for a knife it shuld work quite well. You could even make it angle front for a quick and natural draw.

Post pix if all goes well.

Ever tried Carpenter style jeans? They have a pocket built in already. I can also recommend the custom sheathwork by Vess. I wore one for a week on the Spyderco Paramilitary passaround and fell in love with the sheath! (and the knife too!) My addiction continues to grow, thanks to these knife pushers around here! Marty. :D :D

G'day,
Quite a few years ago I added a narrow, vertical, knife-pocket to the inside of my right front pants pocket. I used some of those 'iron-on' patches to hold it in place. This worked well until the trousers wore out.
Now I keep everything in a belt pouch and have lots of pockets empty for knives--I also carry a Dozier fixed blade in a horizontal sheath when I'm in the mood.

I have been carrying in a small vertical pocket for years. Don't like pocket clips.
I use a 'Buttoneer" to peg just the inside fabric to form the pocket against the back seam of the pocket. Holds the knife vertical, fast, and very discrete.

I have a pair of 'utility' style carpenter pants with a verticle pocket on the right thigh. As perfect as it may seem for carrying a knife (particularly my heavy LM which has no clip and isn't comfortable in my other pockets), I have stopped using it for that. My LM would keep slipping out whenever I sat down - in the car, on the bus, on the couch...if only the pocket had a way of closing.

I have modified pants with watch pockets (such as Levi 501 jeans) to hold knives with clips. I cut out the bottom of the watch pocket and slip the knife into this pocket and through the hole and clip onto the pocket. This is more convenient for me when I want to get things out of the pocket than having the knife clipped to the side of my pocket. In your case it would mean swapping the stuff in your right hand and left hand pockets. Your wallet and cellphone would conflict with knife. Since the keys would be at the bottom of your pocket they wouldn't scratch your knife.

If appropriate, move your keys onto a carabiner, then clip onto a belt loop. This frees your LF pocket, which you could then move your wallet and phone into, leaving your RF pocket open for your knife. I hate having my keys in my pocket, I guess I just have too many keys and gadgets on the ring.

Have you tried carrying inside the waistband? That's usually where I clip my EDC. It works well for me. Some knives are more comfortable than others. The largest I carry IWB with comfort is a Benchmade 710.

Same here, works great for me too. I've done this with all of my Dockers Golf Pants. Now I usually won't buy pants without a watch pocket.

I clip my EDC inside the waistband too. Very comfortable, discreet, easy to retrieve and out of the way.

Thanks for the ideas!

One thing I didn't mention, is I'm a very strict creature of routine. I want a setup that will work and is consistent whether I'm at the office, working in the yard, on the golf course, etc. While the vest thing is really cool - I can't always wear a vest. The carpenter jeans would be good, but I have to dress business casual at the office.

I think I'm still going to go ahead and try something to see how it works. If anyone else has ideas or pictures, I'd love to see them.

Thanks,

Kenny

One big reason that I carry IWB is that the knife is easily concealed. I'm able to wear polo shirts at work and I don't tuck them in so the knife clip never shows. If I clip it to my pocket, then every once in a while the clip is exposed (when I reach in my pocket or when I pull my wallet for example). I don't know how the higher-ups at my office would react to some of the blades I own, so I keep them hidden as much as possible.

Our company policy manual says simple "no weapons". I don't consider my knives to be weapons (most of them anyway) but you know how some people are when it comes to our choice of tools.....

When I'm not at work, I usually carry my knife clipped inside my front right pocket. It doesn't dig into my luv handles in that position, ya know?

I say a belt pouch is the way to go. I saw Maxpedition mentioned here a while ago, got the M2 beltpouch, I believe, and was never the same. So much space and quite discreet. I'm in the security business so no one asks, but I don't know how well it'd work in a suit...
