Ever modify your pants to accomodate a knife?

No - but I've had a knife modify my pants all on it's own - I'm not realy into tip up carry any more.......

We have a brand of work clothes in Oz called King Gee (any tougher and they'd rust) They have a nice little side pocket for a knife or multi-tool.

Vern Taylor once posted that he had a pocket sewn into his pants to accommadate a Buck 501.

The biggest modification I ever made to my pants was to allow carrying a commando dagger with an 8-inch blade in my pocket. What I did was to cut out most of my right front pocket pants pocket. I strapped the dagger sheath to my thigh. I lined things up so I could (carefully) insert the dagger into the sheath by way of my pocket. The dagger's handle was completely out of sight. It was quite impressive when I pulled a knife with an overall length greater than one foot out of my pocket. It really wasn't conspicuous at all when the dagger was sheathed. It made less of a print in my pocket than my 4-inch bladed Italian switchblade.

It seems that a knife belt pouch that looked like a cell phone carrier would be a good thing! I'll have to look around for something.

IWB works pretty well for me, though it's way more comfortable when I have a tucked in shirt between the knife and my stomach. A low-riding folder works best, but a dark knife with dark pants works pretty well, too. A dress shirt billows out around the knife handle with very little effort on my part.

Ok, how about left front, wallet and cell phone, right front, keys and knive - you just need a little key wallet or pouch thing for the keys so they don't scratch your knife.

Or, if you are willing to modify your pants, why not make a little pocket holster? Check out my recent Skirmish review in the Knife Testing forum for some pictures... you can move that to any pants you happen to be wearing.

In California, there is no length limit on carrying a folder in your pocket... but clip in in your waistband, its a concealed weapon!

DRider - Do you have a link?

Here's the picture. It fits great in any pocket, even in jeans, the knife is always perfectly oriented for a fast draw. That's the BM Skirmish in there, and that't not exactly a small knife. Keys don't rattle, knife don't scratch... ;)

I didn't know that. I've looked through the Calif. code and I can't find where the code states that it's OK to carry in your pocket but that same knife is not OK in your waistband. Granted, it's like peeling an onion reading through the code.

Is that a local restriction? I know some cities/towns have their own laws regarding knives/weapons.

I have actually had a few pairs of jean's pockets deepened, to accomodate larger folders.

I've got a pair of pants from Land's End http://www.landsend.com that have a pocket inside the right front pocket. This little pocket is, I think, intended for holding keys so somebody in a suit doesn't jingle when walking. It's on the leg-side of the pocket interior.

This is perfet for clip-equipped folder. Normally, dress pants have a folder, particularly a big one, "print" a sort of awkward shape when the knife's inside almost as distinctive as just clipping to your pocket. This interior pocket makes the knife very discrete but still very accessible.

I've seen it on some other dress pants (mostly what I wear at work), but I've thought about stitching a similar 3" wide x 5" deep inner pocket on other pants.

Hope this helps...

I re-read some stuff and I believe that technically, you are correct.

I think though you have to worry a bit about how it looks to law enforcement/the district attorney. A knife in the pocket gives the appearance of a tool that happens to be out of sight. A knife "secreted" into a waistband, very purposefully hidden, gives the appearance of an "intent" to use the knife as a weapon. They paint you with the label of pre-planned intent to use, and you're screwed.

There's a great California knive law site (with some good knive reviews too) that can be found at

Have you looked at the pants that Duluth Trading offers? They have a pocket between the front and rear pockets on the side that works well for cell phone holsters or knife clips - or anything else you'd want to clip on. I haven't tried them (yet) but they do make a Khaki style that might work in a casual dress environment.
