Ever seen a custom knife fail or break?

Many times but I have been at this game for a lot of years. I'm sitting here looking at a $400 custom folder that the backspring broke while sitting in a drawer closed. I'm guessing the maker used a factory spring from a well known commercial cutlery company that seems to have had a very bad run of springs a few years ago. I could go on but customs are no more infallible than factory made knives.

Exactly. There was a thread about the topic of price does not equal quality. And that holds true. Price can also be related to time. Some customs are more a work of art than a super durable knife. The amount of time to work some really nice scales will increase the cost as well as the rare materials used; such as gold, rare woods, and so on.

What are you guys doing to your knives to break them? I have never broken a knife, because I use them for what they were intended for. Cutting!

both the condor and cold steel broke because of bad heat treat, I was amazed at how well the cs was holding it's edge and then the thing chipped out a half dollar size chunk cutting green cherry wood.

What i meant was that maybe with a custom the chance of getting a lemon is less likely, not necessarily a tougher knife just because it's custom.

the baton we used was not a hammer, wrench, rock or axe so we're in the clear :p

More info on the white handled one please!

I personally have only broken one knife and it was not a custom.

How would you know? Seriously, I'm not criticizing or saying you're wrong. But, please excuse my ignorance... I truly would like to know how you determined the reason for breaking.

Not really custom knives, but I have seen two broken Randalls at a gun show.

One was really beat to hell and broke just in front of the guard. I think it was used as a throwing knife. The other looked brand new. It was a Model 18 and had snapped cleanly in the middle of the blade at the bottom of one of the saw teeth. The man who owned it said the original owner tried to pry a wooden ammo box open.

I don't know for sure, but the cold steel bushman held an incredible edge (my brothers bushman is a lot softer and requires a touch up often) plus it chipped out when cutting a one and half inch green cherry sappling. my guess is that it was hardened and not tempered.

OK, thx. Just curious. I've had one for over 20 yrs. and the SK-5 has served me well. I would kinda like to get one of the newer sheaths, which look way better, and have better retention than my old one.

I can't see the photo attached here... my spam filter keeps blocking it for some reason. :D

People can figure out how to break most everything under the SUN! ;)

I have just not ever got the batoning crazy. With a piece of wood or otherwise. A knife is for cutting. Bring a small hatchet, About 2.2 LBS, with you if you really need to get your Ya Ya's out chopping wood while playing survivalist in your back yard.

Of course I am all for this kind of Batoning.
