Do any of you ever find yourselves eyeing down someone's pocket to see what they are carrying and if so have you ever spotted a grail?
Im always doing that and wondering if I'll ever spy a grail such as an RHK or CRK but I doubt it, I've seen a couple spydercos but that's about it.
Carrying a grail knife is bittersweet in my opinion because on the one hand its nice to know you are carrying the very best of what's out there and unlike sporting a fancy watch or some other adornment its a knife, something you use every day and is capable of saving your life and has thousands of uses but on the other hand from a hobbyist/collectors standpoint its kind of a bummer because there are only a small handful of people in the world who would even be able to identify what you are carrying whereas everybody knows what a Rolex is.
Good thing there is a place like blade forums so that people who want to share their knowledge and admiration for fine edged tools can. Just a thought

I find myself doing just that, paying attention to see what other people are carrying. For the most part, Spyderco and Benchmade are the ones I see the most. I don't clip carry my knives for fear of loosing them, I carry my CRK in a pocket sheath and my Strider is in my pocket.

I spotted a CRK Sebenza one time at an Apple store in Atlanta and said something. The owner was super cool and was one of the wonderful people who use high end knives and was very friendly (I guess a sprint run spyderco helps). And then the apple employee showed off his benchmade... was an amazing "knife" moment.

@Ajack6 . No doubt, I tried to carry a ZT without a clip but nickels and other junk kept getting wedged into the open pillar design

I always try to see if someone around me is carrying. Whether it be a knife or a firearm. Whether for conversation or safety. And I did run into a kid working at an amusement park carrying a sebbie a couple years back. Not really my grail but it surprised me that a young kid like that was into high end knives:thumbup:

I've always paid attention to stuff like that, like a ten year old kid with a pokemon card collection and you see another kid with a sleeve of cards, well you gotta know if he has a holographic charizard or not right? I'm sure some of the younger guys on here know what I'm talking about, ha ha

One thing I've never seen though is a police officer carrying a clipped on knife, is it against regulation to have a visible knife for LEO?

Did you ask if they were members?
That'd be pretty cool to experience. I've met very few people into knives, and I wouldn't be able to id a knife by its clip anyways, unless it's obvious.

@HwangJino
Idk how many knives I could ID just by the clips but I bet I'd do alright, CRK's and piranhas might be tricky because their clips are very similar if not identical

Like others here, I scan the room as well. Note firearms & blades (only know common blades at present time), work boots, shit-kickers, quality or cheap. Hard working men vs yuppies. If there is 5.11/Blackhawk/Mammut/Kuhl I watch their mannerisms and guess for amusement their background. Is that 550 bracelet because you suture with it or b/c it was Tacticool on Facebook. Decide who is a liability and who can possibly be counted on.

All this to get an alternator at the parts store....yea... Old habits...

No, but for personal reasons, a Burnley squid, (and not the CRKT production version, but a true top end Burnley custom) is high on my grail list.

Well, now we're curious! What about the Squid? I've always admired Mr. Burnley's designs.

Just from having good situation awareness I always notice whether or not someone near me has a visible knife clipped some where. Usually I can't tell exactly what knife they may have, but I can usually tell if its a quality brand or just some typical S&W or Gerber. Typically it is just something average, most people aren't knife guys like us nuts. But a lot of people who carry blades have probably heard of Benchmade and Kershaw for example.

Yeah, the bear gryls are never in short supply. I remember a time not super long ago scanning the knife display case in sporting goods at wal mart and just thinking that that display was basically the end all be all as far as selection. My god I'm glad I was wrong

Despite it being a quality designer, it's quite the random "grail" knife I know... It really is a great story, and my wife would kill me if I purchased one (even a production model let alone a few hundred on a custom), maybe one day I'll tell it, for now, curiosity will have to suffice ;)
