Ever stopped someone and asked what they're carrying?

So the wife and I were out getting some groceries last night, and the young man sacking our groceries had a knife sticking halfway out of his pocket. I was curious so while my wife was swiping her card I asked him what he was carrying. He told me it was a Schrade and that he loved it. I didn't really expect him to, but he pulled it from his pocket and showed me the beat up tanto blade. I told him about the Utilitac in my pocket as he finished sacking the groceries, and it was off to see my mother in law after that.

I know all of us here are borderline obsessed with all things sharp, so I was just wondering if any of you guys and gals have actually started up a convo with someone because you noticed a clip on their pocket, or a sheath on their belt? I would love to hear from y'all...

I've never done that; I prefer to avoid people, I feel that it would make me look like a weirdo if I did stop someone and ask what their knife was (let's remember, most people are not knife enthusiasts), and where I live, it's likely to just be some garbage folding box cutter or something that I wouldn't carry if I was paid to.

You make an excellent point. And yeah, I realized after asking the kid that I could have come off really douchey or creepy.

I stay away from people, me and my rescue dogs in the Shawnee Forest. Anyway, with my long hair and beard I might me attacked!

On occasion I'll see somebody carrying but I'll only ask if I can't tell what it is.

So far all ive seen are some spydies and kershaws.

I love scoping people out to see if they have a blade on them. I guess I'm obsessed. =)

I stopped a guy in HEB(local Tx grocery store) and asked about his knife. He showed me a crkt M16 version, and I showed him my Spyderco Gayle Bradley. We had a 10-15 minute conversation about the ridiculous knife laws in San Antonio, and I told him to check out the forum.

Haha nothing wrong with that! I'm a little paranoid by nature so I'm usually sizing people up and every now and then I'll see a pocket clip I recognize. Down here I see a lot of Leeks, different Gerbers, but mostly gas station heroes.

That's funny, man. That's exactly where I was grocery shopping last night

Good to meet another Texan.

I'll do the same so you're not alone!

I've seen a guy toting a buck-strider collab at an antique market last year as well as some crk's and strider's but those were customers at a knife store... :foot::D:thumbup:

Bunch of Texans in this thread! I have asked people before...usually when I see a BM or ZT....otherwise I get really strange looks.

lot of police, paramedics, lifeguards here in San Diego carry Benchmades. Everytime I ask they pull out a Benchmade. Do these first responders get a big price break? The 3 I see the most a Griptilians, Presidios, and Triage. Met a officer carrying a Benchmade 51 in a kydex sheath on his belt..He was a flipper.ha ha

I have never asked a stranger, but I often run into acquaintances and usually do ask them if they have folder or multi-tool, what they have there. Most of the time its cheaper Kershaw, buck or a Gerber. Some have Leatherman's. No one I know ever has a Spydie, BM, or ZT in their pocket (other than me). And I sure never see anyone carrying anything even higher end like a Microtech or a Sebenza that's for sure.

Most of the people I know have never even heard of these companies. If they don't stock it on a shelve at Walmart, they have no clue it even exists. Sometimes I tell about a knife I am carrying. I think I may have planted a few seeds, but most don't care much and feel that "a knife is a knife".

I live in a rural area in the country, it seems to me a lot of guys are more inclined to be into guns and have more knowledge of guns than knives.

Yeah, I noticed that ever since I started to get into knives that I notice more people with knives clipped to their pockets. Kind of like if you carry concealed you start noticing all the people around you if they're carrying as well.

+1 for TEXAS!

on topic: I havn't asked anyone what they are carrying, but I have been tempted if I see a clip I recognize. I might one of these days if I happen to be next to someone who has a knife. If I can recognize a Kershaw or spyderco clip I feel confident that they know a little about blades and won't be freaked out by me asking about it.

Haha yes!

Some cool viewpoints/responses in this thread, guys. And I agree that you rarely see any higher end stuff around town. I believe one of the pricier folders I noticed was a Masters of Defense knife. Still not sure what model, though. I'm not too familiar with those designs.

I once saw a guy with a Benchmade hat on and asked him about it, we talked knives for a few min.

Sad to say I have never seen anyone down here carrying a ZT :(

Nice. Sometimes those short, knife-related convos can be really refreshing.
