Ever waited for a knife, only to be disappointed?

Spyderco Paramilitary (early first generation model). Couldn't wait to get it, then preety much disliked it from the start. The spine jimping was to aggressive, and tore my hand up every time I had to get something out of my pocket. No other clip mounting options. Very long handle compared to blade length (just my opinion).

On the pro side, it was lightweight, had great lockup, and opened very smoothly.

I bought a 400 dollar semi custom knife by a maker everyone raves about. I got and it was barely sharp and the bevel was very sloppy and the grinds werent that clean and it was a tad rough.

I sharpened it and I still like it very much (will be my edc soon) but I was expecting a little more for 400 dollars....
This maker have a name? Or would you get shot for mentioning it:D?

Benchmade Griptilian 551...didn't really wait for it but alot of peple rave about how great it is...liked it a bit at first but got tired of the VERY plasticy feeling handles really quickly.

The HEST/F LE's are beginning to look like a disappointment right about now. I might cancel the two production model orders I have right now. One was charged to my card a couple months ago and I paid for the LE 3 months ago. Now there appears to be more than a cosmetic issue with the closed blade tip being exposed as well as the potential for the edge to stick too close to the exterior of the backside of the handle. This is a disappointment to me. And my LE isn't here yet anyway . . .

Kinda felt that way with mine as well. Cool knife, cut everything I needed it to, but the handle felt really cheap, and at that price mad for a disappointment.

Everyone here has experienced disappointment. I find the bolded part a bit disappointing. Someone will buy that Endura you took back after deploying it all night and wonder WTH is wrong with it (blade play, finger prints, no longer new, but slightly used). It doesn't take me an entire day or night to make up my mind if I like a knife or now. I have to like it if I order it online, but I ususally don't give it a couple hundred cycles. If the grip is wrong for me, I sell or trade it.

I gave it less than 20 cycles over a several hour period. I just gave myself all night to think about it. I wasn't literally deploying it all night.

When I took it back there was no blade play or blemishes of any kind (the few prints I left were wiped). I would not return anything to any store in less than new condition unless it was defective.

Just happened today. got the bm 805 limited today. i hate it. the axis lock tilts to one side when open, the knife seems so long & thin, the handle notch is too far back from the blade.also, the pocket clip has 4 tiny notches,2 on each side, as if when it was cut,it was broken away from the rest of the form like a plastic model car part, leaving 4 little dimples there.on a 200.00 knife this & the tilted axis lock is unacceptable.its going back tomorow.part of the problem too is i just got a umnumzaan star tac, & it makes this 805 look like crap.

I bought my 805 just for the steel and I like it way more than I thought I would, so basically we had opposite reactions on this knife. The thin edge and much better than expected ergos sold me on it within minutes, but I tend to go function over form. Everyone has different tastes though, and if you throw in a fit and finish problem that can immediately turn a knife into a disappointment.

I'd say my biggest disappointment was my Benchmade 760 in M4. The blade was so off center it was touching the handle. My M4 Rift had massive bladeplay, to the point it was dangerous. Since that was a very hotly awaited birthday present that I had to ship off to Benchmade the morning after I received it I was very disappointed, though they made it right really fast. A Kershaw Cyclone I got for my dad was a bit disappointing. A Spyderco Endura Wave had a bit too much play, but Spyderco made it right for me.

No, I have not. I tend to educate myself before I make a purchase of something i may need one day, to possibly save my life, in one way or another. Thats why I love the internet & forums like this. You can learn quite a lot in a short time. Every knife & gun i have ever purchased has done the job i needed it to do with flying colors. A quick example is Cold Steel. Seems that most think they are junk. I love mine. I do not expect ANY knife, that is a value purchase, to come hair shaving sharp, yet my Recon 1 did. It is now even much sharper. It even went through the hood of a car, just like in thier "proof" videos. Guy did not think it could do it. His car, his hood, i told him to go for it & he did. He expected it to break. The look on his face was PURE AWESOMENESS !!!

It's kinda like mountain bikes. You can spend $10,000+ on one. But to 99% of us, we can't tell the difference from a $1000 mountain bike. I have seen cheap knives that excell & very expensive ones that fail. For most of us, if a blade shaves hair & paper, it is plenty sharp enough. But for some, that is just the beginning of "sharp enough."

exactly:thumbup: The lockup is great, the 154cm is awesome, the F&F is up to BM standards, its made in the U.S......but those handles-:barf: Thats one thing people don't seem to talk about much. I don't understand why Benchmade doesn't just throw in some nested and skeletonized liners. Would make the knife feel much more solid I think.

My biggest disapointment was the Randall 5-4 that I waited 4.5 years for. I opened the box and instantly posted it for sale.

Next would be the BM Griptilian. I owned the 2 and just couldn't warm up to them.

There are many more but I'd be clicking away on this ipod all night!

Yep, same here. I read all those rave reviews too, but didn't find the knife to be all that great. The handles were cheap feeling. The balance was kind of blade heavy and weird. It seemed rather thick and was bulky to carry in the pocket, especially with the clip attached. Mine also had some side-to-side blade play that only went away when the pivot screw was so tight you could barely move the blade. One of these days I plan on trying a mini grip to see if it's more to my liking.
