I need a recommendation for a knife that I can carry around and cut boxes/envelopes and take on camping trips and stuff. I don't really look for much in a knife as long as it cuts stuff but I'm sure you guys have good suggestions for me.

I just got a Kershaw OD-1 for 30 bucks (marked down) at walmart. Very nice knife for the price.

3 inch Folder- Kabar Dozier Folding Hunter
3.6 inch Folder- Rat 1 Folder
Fixed Blade- Mora Bushcraft Force ($29.95 shipped free from the place named after the longest river in the world)

If you like speed assist then the Kershaw Clash or Volt II. The Rat 1 or Kabar Dozier folding hunter are also good. If you dont want a clip on one hand folder then how about one of the SAKs. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Yes I do want a folder. I'm googling some of these options and I want to know how this forum feels about the standard blade, and the partially serrated blade, and while the blacked out blade looks pretty cool, is there any type of functionality sacrificed? Also do knives tend to develop a patina? I'm pretty big on the whole patina-developing thing.

EDIT - Also I live in California so I'd like a knife that is legal to carry around. I know it's pretty unlikely that cops will go around snooping in my pocket to check the length of my knife but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. From what I've read the limit is 3 inches but I might be wrong.

if you aren't a real knife nut and don't really sharpen as often as you should I would then recommend the partially serrated blade so you can at least saw through what you want. Blacked out blade doesn't affect performance one way or another. Yes knives do develop patina but mostly on carbon steels, stainless won't as easily because it is stainless of course! I have heard of people forcing a patina on stainless but I don't recall how.

The vast majority of folding knives, especially economy models, are stainless steel of some kind - frequently unspecified.

You do want a reputable brand for purposes of safety, if for no other reason.

California state law apparently sets no length limit and allows concealed carry of knives (as is true in Ohio):

Uninformed and incorrect statements of law abound.

However, cities may well have ordinances governing the length of blades. After all, you are in California. 0____0

Where in California do you live? There's no state law regarding blade length on folders, but some areas have local laws, like LA's 3 inch law. I know a lot of officers just check to see if the blade is longer than the width of their hand, though. Depending on where you live, too, the police might be more lenient. There's almost no violent crime where I live, so I pretty much ignore the knife laws.

As for a knife recommendation, all the ones mentioned so far are excellent suggestions. I'd also suggest that you see if you can find a Kershaw Shallot or Leek at that price, although you might have to search around a little.

I've beat the hell out of a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman and it has held up well.

Probably the best <$30 buy in a pocketable knife suitable for camping duties is the venerable Buck 110, available at WallyWorlds for ~$27. Their excellent blade is of a great SS - 420HC - and they come with a belt mounted sheath, too. It is a large US-made "American Classic" - and a bargain. It will range up to it's MSRP of $66 elsewhere - it's a loss-leader at the discount stores.

Byrd Meadowlark G10 as well.

Victorinox Pioneer or Farmer. (around 20-25$)

Opinel No.(whatever size you want). (depends on the model, but starting around 8-10$)

You won't have to worry about any of those getting you in trouble with the law (within reason), as they're some of the most people-friendly designs on the planet. Outstanding quality, though. I've been carrying an Alox Pioneer as my general use knife and it's performed extremely well.
