Every Day Manly Pack Carry

I would for sure try a Maxpedition Versipack. They look pretty sweet. I am gonna get one soon.

I actually just ordered one of these last week:

http://www.lapolicegear.com/blx4opba.html

Hasn't arrived yet, but I think it is pretty similar to the one you got. The pouches on the sides will hold a couple Nalgenes outside of the main compartment so no chance of anything getting damp inside.

This may seem like quite a large kit bag, but for me one of the most important factors in an outdoor situation is the ability to swap clothing layers on and off depending on the time of day and your activity level.

In fall and winter when the temperature can go from high forties with sunshine during the day to well below freezing in darkness after dusk, you need the ability to carry a good sized volume of clothes around that you aren't wearing. I wear XLT and 2XLT. Just my fleece layer and outerlayer can fill the main compartment on a pack like this without room for much else. For that reason, I just don't see smaller bags as being practical unless you are knocking around fairly close to the comforts of life.

Once you get into a pack this big, a backpack is the only choice.

only real men wear pink :p

I think this one would look better in mauve? What color are your eyes? :D

Seriously, my day pack is a Bigelow top-load from L.L. Bean. A little bigger than you're looking for, however. Still a nice pack, and I agree with Minuteman that extra clothing is an essential. My pack has rain gear (top and bottom breathable), some polypropylene underwear (compressible and very warm) as well as a fleece pullover.

I carry an Eddie Bauer I got years ago at an outlet. Tons of room and extra pockets and not tactical looking at all. It's call a Guide Pack I think. It's worked well though it can be a bit large at times but I love it.

Maxpedition Monsoon. I carry it everywhere. I took an old back piece from a balistic vest and put it in the back. It's now soft armored too!.

Plenty of room for tons of stuff. Molle tabs to add to it with other pouches too.

I've been looking for some type of pack or bag for daily carry to work, church, kid's softball game or wherever. I don't want anything too military looking that will draw attention. I want to carry my backup survival items (typical PSK), small flashlight, first aid kit, daytimer, change of clothes for the 4 year old, etc. This may sound funny but I don't want it to look like some kind of purse. Most backpacks seem a little big for everyday carry. Not sure that the messenger bags are what I want. Not sure if those sling back packs are designed more for women. Briefcases are too formal and hard to carry. Anyone here carry anything or have any suggestions or ideas.

After re-reading this, I hear gym/duffle bag. Something I use for hauling my percussion (as in drummer) gear is a travel tote-- a small duffle bag with lots of pockets. Ebags has this one on sale and I like TravelPro stuff.

At four, your tyke is about ready for a backpack -- haul yer own, Kid!

You might try Dillon. They have what looks like a computer nylon briefcase. Has a compartment for a concealed firearm, mags, knife etc and is only $40.

I second that motion on the osprey packs. I have the Atmos 35 and love the heck out of it.

I like it because of it's lightweight construction. I know that many of the folks in this discussion like the cordura counts that are found in the maxpedition models. But the ripstop and multi-directional materials seem to hold up really well (at least that is my experience).

My old work bag was from Hialeah Track. Bright pink with a Flamingo on it to boot! Comments were kept to a minimum when it was opened and the ugly tuo toned green parked SA 1911 was on top. It wore out, but I liked the color.

Guess it's a SoFla thing, growing up around Flamingos. No one really commented on the 1911. I like Aloha shirts also, they conceal the 1911 on my belt very nicely. No problems there either.

Now, it's a Filson Med field bag. Not pretty, not cheap, but I should never have to buy another.

Buy quality, cry once.

I have both the DuluthPack Shell Bag and the Maxpedition Fatboy. I carry the shell bag on a regular basis in the summer time (in the winter, I tend to carry everything I need in my coat pockets). I never take the Fatboy anywhere -- it looks too tactical for my tastes and I don't like it that I can't wear it on both sides of my body.

The only problem with the shell bag is I hated the original strap on the thing -- I'm 6' tall and I found the stock strap to be way too short. After a lot of experimentation, I ultimately ended up replacing it with a camera bag strap from Lewis n' Clark.

As has been noted here, none of these options are the cheapest things on the market. But unless you want to walk around with that mil surplus look, I think you have to pay at least $50 - $70 for a man bag, and greater than $100 isn't uncommon. Of course, if you're willing to go military surplus, then you can do the job in $10 - $20.

By the way, a lot of people really like Timbuk2 messenger bags so you might want to check those out. I don't own one myself, but I've been tempted from time to time.

In my opinion, the "ultimate" man bag still doesn't exist. Maybe someone will build it someday. Anyway, I keep looking ....

I just picked up a used L.L. BEAN "Original Continental Rucksack" It is comparable in size to the German surplus rucks but lighter and better padded. I just checked their web site and they still carry them in a variety of materials and colors, nylon pack cloth, waxed canvas, wool and an all leather one that looks great. I like the one I got for my Urban BOB, it is light, well made, will carry what I need and is not real tactical looking so it won't stand out among the sheeple. The nylon pack cloth model goes for $39 and goes up to $ 250 fotr the leather.
You will have to look for them on their siteby clicking veiw all items but they are there.

I've had one of those for a daypack for a decade and it's still going strong. Been up and down a lot of rivers and mountains in all weather.

Are there any packs out there with similar looks to the Swiss S&P pack posted earlier? I really like the older style of the pack, with the canvas and leather, but they're just not big enough for me.

The aerostich courier bags are well made and rugged. They come in manly colors and safety colors ;).

+1. I have used a grey Aerostich courier bag every day for a couple of years (on and off my motorcycle) and it is as good as new. I have the "courier" size because I have a lot of books and papers and things for work, but they come in smaller sizes too.

I also have their Darien riding suit. It's all very rugged, well made stuff.
