Everybody Fess Up

I have purchased 1 knife that I returned, a Case yeller pen (posted about it here a while ago). I haven't gotten it back from Case yet, so I don't know the result.
My Henkles came and I was disappointed that the backside stag was concave, but kept it because I wanted to use it.
My Case Peanut SS in Autumn Bone is a good one as far as fit/finish and spring snap, I was surprised at how orange it was, but it is growing on me.

My first three GEC knives had problems:

Scagel "Fruitport" (made by GEC) had gaps between the bolster and scales and revealed some kind of dried yellow adhesive. I didn't send it back. It is a nice knife and a user. My White Owl had a bevel that was so uneven that I could not get it adequately sharp. I sent it out to a forum member and had it reprofiled. My 2011 #85 forum knife was hitting the backspring and my bottle opener would not open bottles. It is currently with GEC.

My orange Bullnose, however, was perfect: perfectly centered, just the right amount of snap, excellent and sharp edge. I, too, like that they stand by their product. Based on other's experiences, it seems like I just had a bad run of luck with my first few. I'm sure there will be more (like a stag conductor!) one of these days.

I had a humpback stockman, really nice stag, that I eventually traded at a show. The spey blade was hard to get to, and it was a bear to get open. Great knife otherwise, and I should have kept it, but traded it off. Not terrible, but I would like to see Case use a 420 similar to what Buck uses, or just 440C. On last year's Bose model, the coffin jack, my main blade wasn't razor sharp like my Tribal Spear was, but a few swipes on my strop and it was fine.

Except for two, most brand new Queen folders I've gotten have been dull. Not somewhat sharp but downright dull. Their cocobolo knives were dull, their honey amber bone knives were dull. I guess I can't complain that much, I kept going back. Scott Gossman put a really nice edge on a Queen trapper I had, and like an idiot, I traded it. Not much to look at, the logos had faded on it, but it was comfortable and just like a razor. A couple years ago, I picked up a Mountain Man slipjoint with zebrawood scales, and a honey amber bone canoe. Not Spyderco sharp, but pretty sharp, like lightsabers compared to other Queens. I just picked up a Queen slimline trapper, brand new, and have removed a fair amount of steel looking to get a sharp edge on it. D2, I'm just going to take it on vacation with me, and stop at a knife shop down there, or take it to Scott. It's a real shame that Queen doesn't put good edges on their knives. The zebrawood and amber bone scales look really good to me, but if it doesn't have an edge, they might as well stamp their knives Franklin Mint ;). I got the Dan Burke barlow collaborations second hand, the edges were fine but that might have been the previous owner. Shields have shifted on my cocobolo models also. Most of the Schatt and Morgans I have had were great edge wise, except for the fit and finish on the Heritage models. The half stops were loose on my 2011 two blade jack and 2012 premium stockman.

Great Eastern and all of it's brands are probably my favorite knives out there right now. A few of my models from them are absolute nail breakers. The more recent manufacture seem to be a little better.

I would like to see Buck use 440C instead of 420HC, but I have gotten along fine with the steel. It's heat treated by Paul Bos, you can't get much better. Some shields have fallen out of my 301's on the newer designs.

My Para2 has a blade blemish, but its used pretty heavily so it doesn't rly bother me. Never bothered to send it back. Doesnt change the fact that its a great knife!

I´ve tried already a lot cutleries... None of them makes really bad knives.

My GEC #73 had some bladeplay and some gaps. But I could fix it up, with some help of you guys.

The other one that has some blade play is my Carl Schlieper Canoe with staghandles. I gonna send it back to C. Schlieper asking for repair or warranty. I would also pay for repair, if necessary. My C. Schlieper Muskrat has some gaps, but nothing that would influence the work on the knife. Let´s see, what comes out...

On a Case Peanut rubs the blade against the liner, that causes dulling the blade. I gonna let it that way. Nothing really to worry about.

Kind regards
Andi

My Tuna Valley (GEC) came dull on two blades. Spring pivot pin too high to scale. Main blade kick too high, point was above liners.

I sharpened it, used a nail set to form spring pin head for flusher fit to scale. Then filed kick to lower blade in liners, and now consider it one of my favorite folders.
Being able to file the kick beats the heck out of two customs I have that have no kick to speak of and allow the blade to hit the back spring.
Last five Case folders have seemed perfect in every way.

Case mini trapper- identical gaps in both springs as well as a shield that fell out, didn't return it (shield was a problem after 2 yrs of daily carry)
Case peanut- absolutely flawless, perfect in every aspect. EDC
Ontario "Demo"- incredibly lazy spring on main blade, all other blades are OK, slight burrs on the edges of the handles, kept it.
Klein TL-29- both had very stiff pulls on the screwdriver blades, newer one has a visible pin in the bolster and a miniscule gap in one of the springs- kept it
Bear and Son scout-blade hits backspring. Didn't send it back (although I should, to see what kind of warranty they have)
All in all, I fell that I've been pretty lucky with my knives so far. Mainly just gaps.

Buck-301 Spey blade and sheepfoot blade rubbing each other, main blade had a bit of wiggle. Sent in and was exchanged

302-Back of the knife was angled. Some time with some sandpaper rounded things up.

501- On the first one, the blade kept hitting the backspacer when closed, and had a bit of blade wobble. Also, the spring sat way low when the knife was closed. Sent that one back and it was exchanged. Next one had loose handle scales. Gave that away, bought another that had some blade wobble. Sent that one back, wobble was fixed but then scales were loose. Sent it back and scales were fixed.

055- Blade wobble. When I tried fixing that, I messed up the frame trying to fix it and had to send it in. One I got back was perfect

303-Just won this one off Ebay, brand new in the clamshell. Fit and finish was great, but the edges were ground way too thick. We're talking 60 degrees or more on the spey and sheepfoot, and around 50 on the clip. Copious amounts of elbow grease and the edges are nice and sharp now.

309-Not too bad, just the edges were ground a bit thick.

I've had to send a couple of Case knives back, but that was usually because of bladeplay after using them for a couple years.

I'm not trying to pick on Buck, I just seem to have the worst luck with them out of the box. Truthfully, I could overlook a lot with their slipjoints if only I could get one that had decent edges out of the box. Most I've seen or had were just ground way too obtuse.

The gec 72 in my pocket has a slight gap inbetweeb the shield and handle slab. It also has a small gap between the liner and the spring. It also has lots of scratches and such from daily carry. I sure do love it. Haven't had a traditional knife to send back yet. Only knife I ever sent back was a sebenza a couple years back.

I have gotten two knives recently that came to mind when you asked this the first picture is of both of them one an Anza Small hunter Model#AZPK1 and the second knife is a Case SodBuster Jr. If you look carefully in pic 2 you can see there is a small chip out of the spine of the blade on the Anza I am thinking about sending it back to Anza for a replacement but it wont affect the performance of the blade so im torn. You can also see in the last picture that the Case Soddie Jr has a very uneven grind at the tip of the blade..... Opinions should I send the Anza or the case back to be replaced or no?

Case pocket worn SBG. Blade sharp but off-center, "pocket-worn" finishing over done around the pins to the point that one of
them has an exposed sharp edge. Bought it as a user so no big deal.

AG Russell Rancher in yellow delrin - stain on blade near nail nick, scratches on back spring in a small area like it wasn't completely smoothed out.
Box looked like it was opened then taped shut. Since AG Russell doesn't sell returns, I chalked it up to production issues.
Did not return it since it is an inexpensive knife and the issues are cosmetic and don't affect its usability.

Purchased less than a month ago and was my first AG Russell knife.

I have an issue with my 2011 GEC forum knife. Dont get me wrong, GEC is my favorit knife company right now but I just dont understand. How could they design a caplifter that doesnt work? It does not make sense to me. Yes I know I can mod it, but I should not have to. Did they not test it on several bottles first? I have $1.00 keychain cap lifters that have always worked on the first try:confused:
