EveryDay Carry 5.5 Inch Folder

Ok gang.

I've been doing some research and am coming to the experts to help me decide.

I'm looking for a 5.5 inch blade or smaller (Texas State Law) locking folder made of lightweight composite material that is an every day carry'er. I'd like the hilt and clip to be black so that it blends better with clothes. I may or may not remove the clip dependent upon how it rides. Partially serrated would be preferred so that it has various application. I normally wear jeans and if it matters I am a bigger fella at 74 inches/ 6"2 to give you an idea of how big my pockets on my jeans are.

Price really isn't an issue but we all know that money doesn't always spell quality. A lot of times its all hype. Any help appreciated in my quest. I'll make sure I post one what knife I elect to go with.

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions and assistance in this quest. It is much appreciated.

PS. I elected to come here because anywhere you shop the salesperson has hidden agenda's to "make the sale"

Cold Steel makes some big folders that may fit your needs, worth a look at least. The Vaquero Grande's are an impressively big blade as are the current Rajahs.

I'm a big Buck fan but don't think they have anything bigger now than the Buck Max. An old BuckLite Goliath may be worth a look though if it's big enough for you.

Lots of custom makers out there if you can't find what you want in a production. However, that will cost a lot more.

The Camillus CUDA MAXX can still be found on eBay from time to time. It has a 5.5" D-2 blade in either a stiletto or clip point. The clip blade comes part serrated or plain edge. It is a nice compact package. The anodized Titanium handle is resistant to scratching. Two pocket clips are available for high or low carry.

I live in Texas, too ,and I carry a large Cold Steel Voyager some. 5 inch blade. Also have a extra large Voyager, but it isn't legal to carry in Tx, it has a blade nearly 6 inches long.

I still have trouble believing that Texas, of all states, has a blade length limit. It just doesn't seem like that kind of place.

Do you want such a big folder just because you can, or because you need that much blade? You said 5.5 inch or smaller, and going to a smaller knife opens up a lot more options (And makes a decision all that much harder...).

Zero Tolerance 0200 sounds like the perfect fit. At your size, it will fit your hand like a glove and tough as the Texas sendero...

Nice, thanks for all the replies so far. Keep them coming. Yes, strange that I can legally carry a concealed firearm but I'm limited to a blade 5.5 inches long in Texas. I'm all about keeping it legal so not to give the federal's anything to complain about since I work on a federal installation and am unable to transport my firearm onto the installation. The purpose for this knife would be purely for protection first and foremost and survival secondly.

well i dont know if you need this now, but when the spyderco sczabo folder comes out eventually it will have a 5 inch blade and be a pure bred fighter.

Why? Seems like overkill. I had a Cuda MAXX Stiletto years ago. Nice knife, but I wouldn't even think of EDCing it.

You can get a Spyderco Military with a black blade. The blade is "only" 4" but the handle is long enough to give you almost another inch of reach.

Cold Steel has Voyagers (and a Gunsite tanto) with 5" blades.

The CUDA Maxx carries really well, being very flat, and it's very strong framelock.

Spyderco military
Strider SMF CC
Cold steel Rajah II

All good choices:D

Good luck in your quest:thumbup:

Thanks for all of your posts. I tell you what...that Cuda Maxx 5.5 is sick. Where to get one though? And yes, It would be an EDC but I wouldn't use it unless necessary.

Cold Steel XL Voyagers or the Gunsite 2 Series feature a 5.5 inch blade with only about a 5-6 ounce carry weight. I'm not totally sure about that though since I think Cold Steel has "upgraded" their Voyager line with steel liners so it depends on which generation of Voyager your getting. The older ones without the finger troil weigh in about 5.3 ounces while the new ones with the new checkering and a finger troil will weigh about 6.3 ounces.

If your looking for a defensive blade then the Voyager series in terms of reach is hard to beat in terms of it's reach to weight ratio.

Another alternative is the Spyderco Police 3 which has a 4.5 inch blade. Seriously though, if your looking for a defensive blade 3.5 is usually my min but 4.0 is definitely enough reach to get the job done. Anything beyond that I count as extra.

other alternatives is maybe a Benchmade LFK or a Dalton Battle Dragon (not in production) which both have 5 inch blades. The Battle Dragon is 5 ounces and is automatic, while the LFK is manual and weighs about 6-7 ounces.

Just remeber 5.5" is from the handle/guard forward not just the sharpened part. I would recommend a 5" blade just to play it safe.

Out of curiosity, why such a big EDC knife? A blade that big on a folder really limits your options, whereas the 4-4.5" category has tons of great options, all still very usable in a defense setting(assuming you know what you're doing).

The new Cold Steel XL Voyagers should have a 5.5" blade rather than 5" or 6", but I don't think they're out just yet.
