Blessed is he who in the name of charity and goodwill shepards the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brothers keeper and the finder of lost children, and I will stike down upon the with great vengance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers, and you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengance upon the.

For evry day cary I would use a dayback. I have several Jansport daypacks, they hold up well and come in many configurations. I suggest one with a padded back though as some survival items have pointy sides. My favorite packs though are Gregorys.

I started with a Jansport daypack and settled later with an EMS 3000 (Eastern Mountain Sports) as my hiking daypack.
Jansport: ~1000 c.i., lots of pockets, padded back but horrible shape and absolute lack of comfort, intimidatingly small size shoulder harness. Good for bookbag though.
EMS 3000: 3000 c.i., top loader with only one real pocket, great comfort, expandable capacity, more adjustable to need. Bad bookbag though. Size is perfect for me for day hikes too (never found it too big).
I would suggest that you should try on many packs and narrow down for what you would mainly use it: on street or outdoors.

I guess I forgot to mention that the EMS is an internal frame backpack with hip belt.

try these great manufactuers!

I have used or field tested many of these packs of various sizes either in the wilderness or on the street. They are all very well made and have lot's of features.

LL Bean is known for making packs for the "organizer". In other words, their packs tend to have a lot of pockets, but with pockets come weight. Their smaller packs look pretty functional for the price, but there are certainly better larger packs out there.

Another company you may want to look into is Jack Wolfskin. They are a European packmaker that six years ago were seen as a steal. Planet Outdoors carries them at http://www.planetoutdoors.com/Home/0,1153,1,00.asp
