MBK Wolverine - I don’t know how it’s possible, but the lock bar is worse today than yesterday. I absolutely cannot budge it one-handed with my right thumb, and can barely move it two-handed with my left. The pressure is so tight against the blade that it squeaks when I slide it open, and I can feel the friction in the blade. Even if I gently thumb roll it open; snapping it open makes it even worse. I think this one is going back, unless somebody has a suggestion on how to loosen it up. I am waiting for a response from MBK, so I won’t do anything until I hear from them. But I gotta do something, because it’s NFG as it is.

Where did you buy it?

Is it a counterfeit? Or just a big rotten lemon?

There's clearly an issue with this knife, I think it's time for them to take it back and either send you a good one, or a refund.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you need to send it back 100%. I had a similar situation with a Shiro Stellar. I’m an absolutely huge Shiro fan and think that they make some of the best production flippers/knives ever made but I received a brand new Stellar from an authorized dealer and it made an audible squeaking noise whenever I pressed the liner lock to disengage the blade to be able to close it. I own multiple Shiros and I’ve never had anything close to this happen, if fact all of the others I own have that perfect Shiro action in every manner. I think I just got a bad one because I haven’t heard of anyone else having this issue.

Directly from Monterey Bay Knives, so it sure as hell better not be a fake! 🤣

yeah, it sure seems that way. I have a few other liner locks with stiff lock bars that are just a little unpleasant to close, but this one is worse than any of them. Again, I’m still waiting for a response to my very polite complaint to MBK, so we’ll see what they can do about it.

I think if I could get it apart and polish the lock contact points on the blade and the tip of the lock bar, like I saw in a video, that would possibly fix it. But I can’t get the #@$& thing apart - I tried, but the pivot barrel wouldn't cooperate. Rather than risk balling something up, I put it all back together and conceded defeat. I figured if I’m having that much difficulty getting the barrel out, I’d NEVER get it back in. I’ve disassembled knives before, and I’ve never seen anything that was such a bitch to get apart. So F it. It’s too bad, because the more I look at and handle the damn thing, the more I like it. I’d like it a whole lot more if I could operate it.

How is the heat treat on these? I've heard theu run soft.

I tend to stick with their A2 or O1 steel and they’ve been more than fine in my use. I’ve used their 3V and it’s definitely softer than I would like. I’ve heard their D2 and Aeb-l is pretty soft but, I have no first hand experience with either. They offer some Magnacut now but they are listing it at 59-60 hrc so, I’m not interested.

I've never had an issue, on this, or any other L.T. Wright. The Frontier Valley model is pretty much exclusively made in A2, and they do a great job with it, in my experience. It's also a small, edc-size blade, so I'm not doing anything crazy with it. I've batoned their larger knives in A2, 3V and AEB-L a fair bit and never had a problem at all with those.

Wolverine, continued: some progress. I saw somewhere that lube (wet or dry) can help with lock stick. I don’t want to mess with REM oil around there, because it will inevitably end up on the lock bar, which will only make things worse. But … then there’s graphite, i.e., pencil lead. A couple of rubs of a pencil tip on the lock stop on the blade and a few minutes of rubbing it in against the lock bar, and it actually smoothed it out enough that I can repeatedly push it open one handed. The bar is still pretty stiff to push, but not significantly worse than a few others in the collection. Maybe a little more working in the ‘graphite’ will make more progress.

If I pay full retail especially from the maker, that sucker better be perfect. Second hand for a discount is different story all together.

I got an Emerson Commander about five years ago that had really bad lock stick. Someone here suggested using a Sharpie on the lock face. I thought it was kinda dumb. I had a sharpie in the drawer, so I figured, what the heck! That loosened it up right away. After a couple days of use, the lock stick came back, so I applied the Sharpie ink again. It's been fine ever since.

When new, it would take two hand to un-lock my Spartan SHF. To fix, I would gently ease the blade open until it locks with my left hand. Then I would un-lock with my right thumb and ease the blade to half closed. If there was lock stick, repeat and try to use the same force to open the blade, until the lock stick is gone. Increase the force to open the blade until it sticks and repeat the process. It took about 30 minutes with the SHF but it's had no more lock stick even when I really sling that 4" blade out there.
