Evil Katrina and prayers for those in her path...

I live a couple hundred miles from the coast but Katrina came straight through here and did lots of damage. But we are lucky. Nothing like what they have on the coast. I still don't have electricity but my house is undamaged. We finally got the internet back on the computer at the firehouse. Busy shift today so far today. Lots of medical calls. Probably because of the heat and lack of electricity in much of the town. Of course the previous two shifts were much busier. I am not complaining. There are a lot of evacuees here from New Orleans and the coast who don't have a home to go back to. I have a new neighbor, though, who had just moved up here from Biloxi a couple weeks ago. She was surprised by what Katrina did here. We had no serious injuries or deaths here. Thank the Lord.

I lived in metairie once (Monday). It is simply too surreal right now to think about what I and many others have lost forever. I'm in Houston now comptemplating the future. Please don't take this post as me complaining. I have it good! compared to many other. I'm either punch drunk or actually drunk, but I'm really excited about starting over. Starting over is all a lot of people have to look forward to.

I got electricity back on at my house this afternoon. Those poor folks down on the coast and in and around New Orleans are in so much misery. It gets hot down here in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Home trying to kill banana trees that took over while I was gone. House had no water, but I did get a pecan tree thru the roof (which I will take over water any day). Was very lucky, people all around my area got water. My grandfater (in old Metairie) got 6', his house is a total. I've seen Chalmette and I was totally unprepared for what I saw, news and photos can in NO way convey the devistation. I've been helping friends who can rebuild gut their houses since I got back. I'll try to post some pics later.

Thanks,
Sam

The pecan tree that hit my house drove an 8" limb thru the roof. But here's the thing, I had very little water damage from the leaking roof because the hole was punched thru the upstairs bathroom directly over the bath tub! Most of the water leaked straight into the tub and drained out.

I wish those who were a lot less lucky all the best!

Sam
