Evolution of the edc

Hey it is hard to beat any alox SAK for a working knife! I am changing again rigth now. I had been waiting over a decade for Case to bring out a sowbelley or even a same size reg. stockman in stag and carbon. Now they have finally given me all that I just find that even living here in TX I just don't want that much knife any more in my pocket. I have had no less then three canoes pass through my collection all three different brands, but I just can't get enough of my much liked Case Canoe. It feels so right and does everything I want but carries better then everything else in it's size! I think maybe I have found the one, but it has to be a Case!

I have some type of SAK on or near me every day. I doubt the SAK will ever again become my sole carry knife, but don't see myself parting ways with any of them, just too useful.

just a small update, was cutting open a toilet box to show the customer (lol sounds funky i know) but i cut through the cardboard box and scraped the top inch of the blade against the porcelain and it definitely dulled the blade. Since i didnt have a stone/sharpener on me ...well i had one in the truck, but still. So since we also sell porcelain/ceramic tiles, i took a porcelain tile and used the unglazed edge to field sharpen the blade.

HOLY CRUD! the blade was jagged, but boy did it cut, cut plastic/nylon pallet ties easier than anything i've used up to this point. It wont shave hair (yes i tried) and it barely cuts paper..well it does, but its not as smooth as it used to be, but the edge is sooo toothy it just seems grab ahold of whatever it is i am trying to cut and...cuts its fairly easily. I guess this is what "field sharp" really is

In my understanding, "sharp" needs to be understood in terms of the intended purpose.

Boye Boat Knives (point your search engine in that direction) use a cobalt based alloy to give a "toothier" edge, which supposedly makes them very good for cutting lines.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

You've just discovered why "field sharp" can be better than the for show hair whittling edge. For the past year or so, All I've been using is my old boy scout 'carborunum stone or the bottom of a coffee mug. And I've sorted through the coffee mugs to find the most aggressive one. It won't have hair worth a tinkers darn*, but goes through cordage, cardboard, meat, and other real world stuff like butter. Goes through raw chicken livers for catfish bait like a light saber. Plus it actually seems to stand up better and stay that kind of sharp longer. Opening a box with that edge you have to make sure all your fingers are out of the way!:eek:

Carl.

yeah hair whittling sharp doesnt grab onto hard plastic, really hard to get a cut started,
this field sharp, grabs right in and does the job

very pleased :P

"Wenger SI". What does "SI" stand for ? Soldier Inox ?
I've been buying these on ebay and now have a bunch of them, most new & unused. I just can't pass up a great knife for little $.
But now, inspired by this thread, i have to try out one of these.
Thanks for the Inspiration.
