Brand new Daniel Koster Bushcrafter Knifeworks with custom Ed Alpern sheath. I received this knife from a fellow member and friend here on BFC, it was the epitome of Daniel's version of a Bushcrafter knife with a great Scandinavian grind. I've never really used a Scandinavian grind before but I quickly developed and affection for it. Because of the single bevel grind it's relatively easy to keep the angle while freehand sharpening and the single bevel grind id just a workhorse of a do all grind.
I fell in love with how sharp it is and how easy it is to maintain that edge so I figured there was nothing left to do but use it, There's no bigger sin than to receive a knife as a gift and not honor the giver by using it. Don't worry, I'm using the heck out of it and every day so far
It didn't take me long till I tried to improve on the edge. It had a great grind just a little toothy for me so rather than take it to the EdgePro I decided to freehand hone it and take my time polishing the edge. It's harder to screw up the edge if you take your time, you can't put metal back on the edge so be careful how much and fast you remove metal. Most of the work was done by this $10 white ceramic stone and a homemade leather hone on a stick I made 20 years ago.
I'm always one to make improvements specific to me, I'm nit improving on the knife, just the little particulars relevant to how I carry and use the knife. In this case retention while traveling through the weeds is important. Can't use a knife in the woods if you don't have it in the sheath when you need it. I have a fried who uses Velcro to bundle wire and he gives me his leftovers so it was my medium of choice for retaining the blade and as a way to secure and piggyback some things onto the sheath like a fire starter, a compass, small diamond coated sharpening pen, some para cord and a few other items depending on where I'm headed. I even added a clip to turn the sheath into a dangler to make it easier to carry, now it swings outta the way when I sit it the truck and doesn't stick me in the side.
You can see with use everything is darkening, getting a patina and developing character. The best part of owning a knife is the memories associated with the scratches and stains on the steel blade, scales and leather sheath. A knice deep polish is beginning to develop on the bevel.
Had the book long before the knife.

The knife meets all the requirements of a Bushcraft knife by the definition in this book.
Some of the things I take for a wander in the weeds in my neck of the woods.
Thanks A. for the gift, it actually has been beneficial in my recovery for the shoulder surgery, the motion of sharpening and stropping help to strengthen my muscles and the fine motor control needed to maintain the angle while honing and strength to strop it has been very helpful for exercises at home.
I'll post more pics as time goes on. Any of you folks do the same thing? What do you do to personalize your knife, what do you add that without a doubt shows it's your knife. Don't forget the pics, you know we love pictures.
