Though I am not Santa, yet another present idea:
The Sibley Guide to Birds by David Allen Sibley and endorsed by the National Audubon Society. Published by Knopf.
The best bird guide I have seen so far!!!!! (Wow...

)
544 pages with 6600 color illustrations. For the price of $35.

Though I have already one I like (All the Birds of North America, the American Bird Conservancy's Field Guide, ISBN 0-06-273028-2) I might want to get the Sibley too.

Hope it helps somebody,

I highly recommend the Sibley guide. One caveat, though. It is a "big" book as field guides go. If weight is a problem, you might want to carry another.

One of the neatest field guides just out is by Kenn Kaufmann, called the Focus Guide to the Birds of North America. The intersting thing about this guide is that is uses photos that are digitally enhanced, which show incredible, realistic detail and is unmatched by other photo bird field guides. It's also smaller to carry than Sibley's book. The isbn for this book is: 0395964644.

Buy 'em both!

The Sibley guide is just a joy to leaf through.

Thanks Hoodoo, I gonna check out the K. Kaufmann book. The photo enhancement sounds good and might overcome the usual quality problem of many photo guides.
I like the small size of the 'ALL the Birds' book. That book organizes them according to living habitat and uses a page side color scheme that helps the novice, like me.

HM,
Yes, I'm very fond of the All The Birds Field guide. I like the quick ecological keys they have. I also think the pics aren't too shabby, especially with the habitats often shown in the background. All The Birds, and the Nat. Geographic field guide are my favorites for field use. Just a note: I've found 1 error in All The Birds. On 101, the scientific names for the Eastern and Western Wood-Pewee's are switched around.
