Excelsior Knife Spitfire Jack

As for investment, knives are a poor one. You want to make investments, look into real estate or the stock market. For the vast majority of people knives are either a tool or a hobby. For those here, they’re probably a form of entertainment.

Yes.... my point, exactly. I find myself yearning to buy the newest offering, when in reality, I already have several knives that would perform the same function. Case in point... the new #33... I really want to get one... just to have it. I already have two Case half-whittlers that are almost the identical knife (1/4" shorter), and another older Case single spring half whittler that will arrive in a couple of days. Do I need the #33? Nope. Do I want one? Yep. A hobby. A way to say "look what I got!" I enjoy my hobby, for what it is. I also have to keep my hobby in the financial realm in which I live... which is why I cannot justify the really nice custom stuff. I'm happy that others can do that, though....

Same with me...
But also, the extra F&F of a custom just doesn't equate to 4 or 5 times the price for me.

You can buy some customs for the price of a GEC.

My first custom was $50, a small pocket fixed blade with no handle slabs, just a blade. My second was $250, a small 2-blade trapper. The fit and finish were not perfect, but it had sweet bone, was hand made, almost a zero bevel satin finish blade and had file wiorked liners that almost matched. I have a $25 custom made of Remington parts, that exists in no catalog. A custom slipjoint at $400 can easily be worth more to a knife lover than 3 Lionsteel Best Mans :)

I don't shop for perfection in a custom, any object made by man is flawed because humans are flawed. My Steel Will $40 flipper is almosr perfect but it's made by machines and assembled by humans. I shop for what "floats my boat" :)

Hope that Spitfire gets used.
