Exceptional pieces

Just talked to Hill Pearce. He knew that Bowie intimately. Yes, without question he was influenced by Jim Schmidt's work.

Jim and Hill shared a table in 1981 at the NYC custom show, where this particular bowie was delivered to a fellow, a Michael *******, who was a BIG collector in those days. Apparently, he got his funding from dealing drugs, and once called Jim from the pokey to bail him out. Ultimately, he served federal time and his girlfriend acquired his collection. She had a table at a NYC show with this and other magnificent pieces. Where they all went, who knows.

Hill tells me he loved what Jim did and asked if he could make his own in this style, but he left out the quillon. In true Jim Schmidt character, Jim applauded him all the way.

That's the skinny. (As I heard from one who was there!)

Coop, you spelled Michael's name wrong, the story is about 3/4 of the way right, and you probably don't want to bring up his name again in print on the internet.

I knew Michael, and the girlfriend in question. They are/were both good people. Michael is crazy as a flippin' loon, though.

Good point. Edited as suggested.
