Gotta chime in. For overall fitness I think the Concept 2 rower is the BEST thing going, it will greatly improve cardiovascular fitness while increasing overall strength and lean muscle mass (keep in mind though that we are not talking bodybuilding or powerlifting). Also keep in mind that medically your cardiovascular conditioning and body fat percent are far more important to your longevity than being able to bench 500 pounds:D One last thing as far as techique goes it comes with a DVD explaing/showing everything step-by-step and if you have any questions just call Concept 2 they are a very supportive company and are a pleasure to deal with, not to mention that this is a COMERCIAL quality rower that properly maintained may last forever. BUT since rowing in NOT a weight bearing exercise women should workout with freeweights to help prevent bone loss as they age.

Regarding muscle machines I've owned or used about every thing out there. The bowflex, and soloflex are very good machines for increasing lean muscle mass and strength to a point and you don't have anywhere near the soreness you get with free weights/hammer strength type equipment. However because of their much lessened negative resistance (compared to free weights) and the progressive nature of their resistance (gets heavier thru the rep rather than staying the same) makes is much harder to work your muscles to FAILURE which is essential for increasing maximal strength and mass gains. Which is why D-I football lifting programs use freeweights and hammer machines, but the progressive resistance machines I've tried (soloflex and bowflex) should however do just fine for someone interested in general fitness.

I've used a rower that I believe was by Concept, but it had a video screen where you would race the computer's rowing team. You would see them gaining on you and you would push that much harder. It was great in that it really keeps you motivated, much more so than just a timer or powermeter. I looked for one for my home gym and never found the same one though.

I don't know about other companies but Concept 2's do have that feature, the great thing is you can select several different screen options at the push of a button, it is just one of many.

If he doesn't have a lot of time to spend going to a gym, or free time in general, and he is commited to sticking with the program the Bowflex is a great way to go. Three years and mine is running strong. I work over a heavy bag, jump roap or other cardio between reps and get a great workout. Like some have said, overall Free weights are probably better, but they take up more room, limit your work out options unless you go hog wild on equipment, and most importantly take much longer to do the whole work out.

I agree that you NOT skimp in purchasing an exercize machine of any sort. Buy the best you can, otherwise it will be uncomfortable to use, and it WILL become a clothes rack. BUT....
Shop around, you'll be paying A LOT just for the bowflex name, and there's GOT to be others of similar quality! Good Luck!
