EXOTAC Life Cap

Nice piece of kit Mistwalker and a very nice write up.
Got a suggection, swap the EmergenC for Gatoraid packets, it has more of what your going to need in an emergency that the other stuff, you can still put in a packet of Vitimin C tablets if you want.
Also maybe a water bag like this http://www.bepreparedtosurvive.com/1 Qt. Emergency Water Bag.htm
And maybe an Aquamira Frontier filter to round out your kit.

thanks man, and thanks for the suggestions. I had been thinking about swapping some things out and thinking how I was going to address water purification. It was just stocked from some things I had on hand, I still have a few things to pick up.

Mist,

How about I send you a (new, unopened) Pre-Mac Travel Well Pocket Water Filter (as used by the British Military and Ray Mears). Its tiny, 13 cm long, 2 cm in diameter and weighs 60 gms.

I think of it as a sub miniature Katadyn Pocket Filter for my life vests and PSK's, they're so small and light that they can be stashed anyplace else too!

Pre-Mac's web page on the Travel Well, here, Military web page (same filter) here.

Now that looks like a very interesting piece of equipment!

You have one of these to spare?

The nanostriker is awesome, exotac also has damn good customer service...

Agreed on both counts, the nano is awesome, and I have always been happy with their customer service

Thanks man, this comment isn't directed at you or any particular person...I just find it funny how people will pick and choose where they spend their money. I know people who will spend over a thousand on a rifle, 6 or 7 hundred on a hand gun, anywhere from 2 hundred to 6 hundred on a knife, anoth couple hundred on a pack and then build their PSKs from Altoids tins and complain about the prices of other pieces of kit. I suppose it's all in wants and perspectives as always but like I said when someone mentioned the price of my hawk... my friggin t.v. that I seldom watch (and has little chance of ever saving my life) cost over $600.00...don't remember exactly...and I'll get a hell of a lot more use out of this capsule and any other piece of gear I own. I guess it all comes down to personal priorities and how much time one spends in the outdoors. Personally I don't want any of my gear "thrown together" or "second rate" if i can possibly help it. I have spent my time putting kit together on a budget and out of scrap materials when I had no other choices... but I make improvements as they can be made.

Mist, my father was like that. He would pitch a fit if he had to pay $40.00 for a pair of boots (hey, we're talking the 70's ok ?? :) ), but would not think or even raise an argument paying $35,000 for a tractor or for any piece of farm machinery. Same exact reason, he knew it was a priority. By the way, what is the size of that container? I could think of about 4 or 5 uses right now since our last camping trip this summer had 3" of rain in two days with us smack dab in the middle of it. Thanks for the review & information, good shots as well.
Be safe.

I've bought a lot of tools over the years. I learned a long time ago that when my money...or my life...was in the balance, that was no time for bargain shopping if I had the option to do better.

Regarding boiling water in a container made of carbon fiber composite: carbon fiber composites come in many different variants from several different companies. They are not all the same by design. You would have to know the characteristics of the specific material the specific container is made of. Some will withstand the heat of a rocket engine blast. But, the other problem with using any of them as a container for boiling water in is that all share the inherent trait of being good thermal insulators. Cooking containers should be thermal conductors. So, even if it could take the heat (many surely can) a carbon fiber composite container won't be a good container to boil water in.

just heads up. Looks like lifecap is being discontinued.. I picked one up from bladeHQ, they had in stock.
Mine has a funky smell inside - is that normal? Maybe its cf smell?
