The EXOTAC MATCHCAP is another piece of kit I've gotten recently.

It's match case made of machined aluminum. It has textured knurling for a good grip when opening, closing, and using. It has two different striking surfaces with a rough textured surface on the bottom for strike anywhere matches and then there is a red phosphorous striker mounted in a recess on the side of the tube that is sealed from water when the cap is on.

Here are a couple of perspective shots.

and here are a couple of videos of it. The first one is me checking it out the day I got it.

and the second one is a one match fire. You can see that I have been playing with it so much and showing it off to friends that I have worn the red phosphorous striker or filled it with lacquer striking NATO life boat matches. Luckily they also offer replacement striking surfaces, o-rings too.

very nice machining :)

is it long enough for REI matches? that was one of the things (compass being the other) that led me to the K&M safe

I'm definitely happy with mine. I think I'm going to order one of the gun metal ones for my wife's kit.

Mine has lifeboat matches in it with an inch left over over to pack some sort of tinder in on top of them. The hole diameter is just over 5/8 of an inch.

MDIH. Think about it.

 huh?

I found this the other day just l;ookin around the web. It's one of the best I've ever seen, and one lucky one will find a good home here with me.

I am a gear freak and I love these. I'm always down for cool well engineered gear. However, aside from the resilience aluminum provides over plastic, what will these do that the plastic m'jobbers don't? I put a box striker in with my strike anywhere matches just for ease of use and glue some sand paper to the top (again, just in case). The plastic ones have a crappy flint at the bottom too, but it still throws a spark on mine.

I'm probably just frugal right now and would otherwise NEED one of these. So don't take my jabbering to heart too much. However, if you could rebut my points and give good cause, I'll probably HAVE to go buy one :D

Besides the resilience... well...It has a lanyard hole so I can tie it off... I could fill it with sand and using the lanyard I'd have an improvised weapon..of sorts. It has a heavier mass than my plastic one so if I ever had to throw it it would travel further. If it happens to fall in one of the streams I cross and camp next to it will sink rather than me having to dash and splash to catch it I can just cut a stick and get it out without getting wet :D

Is that type two annodizing or type three. You can test this with a razor blade. Give it a scratch in a spot that is hidden - if no anno comes off - it is type three.

Also, why the smaller o-ring? I see where they large one goes but not the smaller one.

It's type two. Not sure about the two o-rings.

could be filled with sand or fishing weights, tied to a braided fishing line and used as a line throwing weight.......

- fishing kit holder....

- pill holder

- tinder holder

etc etc
