To me, there is some possibility of fragility and failure with the threads but I don't see this as something I am going to use a lot. Just for emergencies, so you always have one on your keychain that is not exposed to the elements, etc.
To which you responded:
It isn't as fragile as you suggest.
Just how fragile did I suggest it was? You tell me, please. I think what I said was totally reasonable. I said, "To me, there is some POSSIBILITY of fragility and failure with the threads..." Now, "some possibility" seems to be taken as a slam, by you, because you obviously have some hyper-interest in this device as you even have it linked in your signature line.
You need to just take it easy man, if you're going to get offended by my comments, you're searching for offense where none is or was intended and if you are going to put some product out into the fray, it's going to be criticized, rightly or wrongly on merits real or perceived. That's just the way it is.
What is disturbing is I can give the device kudos and say one thing that is seen as somehow negative and this is a cause for mini-controversy.
Oh...that was just my long-winded way of stating that I'd rather just spend a few more hours at work to make the money to pay for something that is exactly what I have been looking for (and maybe even better with no tools required to change the ferro rod) than spend a few hours making something that wasn't![]()
That's more than fair.
I definitely like that I can carry this one in my pocket or against my body around my neck without it looking like the one I posted above looked before I cleaned it up.
I imagine there have been quite a few made over the years.
I can tell you that long-term storage of a ferrocerium rod that has moisture on it that you cannot even see...can lead to total disintegration.
I like this little Nano Striker thing-a-ma-bob because you can have an unobtrusive ferro rod that is protected and it is right on your keychain. That was the only real selling point of the Aurora, in my opinion.
