Okay...I know my lumbar terms pretty well, but it's the lumber terms I need help with!

I was thinking about making a cribbage board for my brother, and maybe doing some silver inlay on it. It would be really cool, but I am having trouble determining what the pricing means. I don't know what 4/4, 8/4, etc means (is this the thickness in inches?). Also, they give the price in board feet. Is that the same as a foot of board in whatever dimensions? I'm pretty confused, so any help would be appreciated. Also, any hints on what to use or where to get it would be cool. I've only looked at http://www.exotichardwoods.com so far, and hence the confusion. I also looked at Ebay, but didn't really find much.

My other possible choice would be to use a Micarta of some type. Wouldn't be able to do any inlay on that but I could do some cool mosaic pin stuff. Anyway, if I went that route, where would I look for a big enough piece? I'm thinking 1/2" thick or thereabouts with about a foot of length and maybe around 4" width?

Chiro

I can help a bit with the lumber.
Most hardwoods are sold per board foot, random width and length. 1 board foot is 12" x 12" x 1"(4/4). If you have lumber that has been surfaced on the 2 flat sides and is 3/4" thick it is 4/4 lumber or 1 inch thick (in the rough). 6/4 lumber is surfaced to 1-1/4", 8/4 is surfaced to 1-3/4". 144 cubic inches of material in 1 board foot, figured in the rough-- 4/4, 5/4,6/4, ect.
