Just recieved some precision ground 0-1 from a known supplier that has deep scratches and dings in it and is not absolutly flat. What condition do you expect your steel to arrive in. I was expecting perfectly flat and with no flaws. Am I expecting too much?

Jon

No, I would not expect deep scratches or dings. Precision ground sounds like it should be pretty flawless (i.e. no deep dings) to me but, then again I've never ordered bar stock so I dunno.

Steel is never flawless! all precision ground insures is that your steel is the same thickness.this does'nt mean it wont have an 80 grit finish with tons of warps.i have recieved pg steel that is bent all to hell.and also had some that was darn near flat.some places will take it to a high finish while others wont.either way, you'll need to straighten and grind on it so go to town

Jon,precision ground 0-1 is exactly what it means. I would send it back. did your cousin get ti for you????? I never got any that was flat.

I've received precision ground O-1 that is curved, and even some with obvious scratches and dings. However, all it took was a few quick passes with an 80 grit belt to get the dings out. Nothing too deep. I just never thought about it and didn't really need a very precise thickness. The precision ground just saves me time in grinding away scale.

The Tolerance of the PG Should be on the wrapper. For example +.002 / +.000. on thickness and width.
Blanchard ground is usually for over size stock like +.010 / +.015.
Dents and twists do happen but If you were machining a tool and were relying on the manufacturing spec's I would send it back. If you are going to grind a lot off you could still send it back just on the principle that it doesn't meet their spec or was damaged in shipment. I have got to keep the out of spec stock a couple of times at work because they sent out another piece and told me to keep the " No good stock " It was not worth their time to restock a small order.
Good Luck:thumbup:

The O1 I have that is precision ground is perfect, the surface is very uniform, no dings, no scratches and is wrapped in oily paper. I have had some that is poor and called the supplier and they gave me a big price break to keep it. In all honesty it was not worth keeping and I still have some in the shop.

I think most of the dings I get happen during the shipping process. Usually, the pieces are very nice with the same oiled paper wrap that Patrick is referring to, but UPS isn't very friendly to my packages most of the time, and the dings happen.

Several years back, I purchased several orders of 440-C precision ground k & G. It all came in straight, flat, and without dings or scratches. They used a piece of wood on each side of the strips for protection. Frank

If your steel has a bad finish. Send your buisness my way:D The steel we sell is as close to perfect as one can get. If one of my customers has a complaint I will send out a new piece. Send me a e-mail for a RFQ nick@metricsunlimited.com

Thanks
Nick:)

I have never recieved a piece of p.g.f.s that has not been perfect and i would return it
if it was not exactly that. After all that is what they are supposed to be supplying.

Bob

Thanks for the plug David:thumbup:

We only carry tool steel. O-1, A-2, D-2, and M-2.

Nick

Precision ground flat stock is supposed to be just that. Ground precisely to a flat finish within the tolerances on the wrapper. you should be able to take any portion of the bar and machine a precision tool out of it.
if it's crap throw it back, demand replacement or refund, and next time buy from NWA or Tracy Mickley
