Is it just me or has there been a rediculous inflation of Mid-Tech knives lately? I just saw a fairly plain Grimsmo Norseman on Ebay for $3000, that seems rediculous. I guess things are worth what people will pay for them. Just wondering what the consensus is, am I out of line?

I wouldn't call the Norseman a midtech at all. That is a custom. 2 guys making knives and doing a lot of hand work on those. A midtech is when another business or person makes all the parts and then ships them to the maker who assembles and does sharpening. Also it is not worth anywhere near $3000. People are insane.

I'm not a knife maker so I don't know the finances of what it costs to build a mid tech. There are a lot of excellent mid tech being built by small companies around $500. Like the Ramon Chaves, red horse knives and jake hoback. For me as a consumer I'm not willing to pay much more than that $500 for a mid tech. Luckily there are plenty of great knives being made in the sub 1000 dollar category.

If a knife is a one of a kind hand made piece of functioning art then I would definitely pay well over $1000

I have great custom flippers made for 350, and midtechs made for 500. They are both worth the money in my mind, and I think both are fantastic tools. Just do enough research to know what you are getting. Plus there are lots of different "classifications" for knives. Full customs, customs, hand made, entry level custom, midtechs, ultra high end production, etc. Don't get hung up on all the names, just find a great knife. And don't get ripped off! I have seen 20 dollar knockoff blades sell for over a grand... at certain places online.

The people who have mid-techs made by Halpern and others have to pay for them to be made and still make their money. The "makers" are essentially acting as not one finishers ,assuming that they do any finishing anymore, and wholesalers. They are not getting their normal labor money.
