EXPENSIVE Knives: Used or Socked Away"

My EDC is a $1500 MSC XL BFF

Well, I have to admit I'm impressed by all these answers and outlooks. I should have asked how many of you draw six-figure salaries, especially Bkultra and his $1,500 MSC XL!

Just out of curiosity, Bkultra, what kind of work does your knife see?

Now, considering guns, a person can buy a brand new handgun or rifle, use it for X number of years, then sell it for at least what they paid, sometimes more. I'm just curious if the same thing applies to expensive knives. I suspect not, unless it's kept in mint condition, and what would be the point of that?

I always have my small P/E Sebenza on me except when I'm at the beach. The beach gets a cheaper blade like a leek, delica, trance. For hard jobs it's my emerson CQC-7 or Spyderco Delica4 or Kershaw Avalanche and new to the mix is the BMHK14205 Snody AXIS (not sure where this fits in to the mix).

I just got my 1st expensive knife today (never spent more than $200 on a single knife before this one) a small classic sebenza with micarta inserts...this beauty won't leave my side for a logn time, lol...If you asked me if I had a sebbie if I would ue it about 5 years ago I would say no way its too nice...but these days my views on knives is much different, I want to buy nice ones to use them! Not just look at them...I went from a collector slowly into a user over time...lol...

My knives range in price from $50 - $500, and I use them all. If I had a ton of money, I'd probably buy a lot of knives that I would never use simply because I find knives visually appealing.

High end knives have great warranties, if you break one they are fixed or replaced. I used knives to the ground previously, but just few days ago I did decide to spend a few $$$ on a good knife with exceptional warranty will it see use, hell yeah its gona be my new EDC, If not, and i don't like it for some reason I'm going to sell it. The best part about some of these knifes is that if they don't fit the bill they can be sold or the same price, and in some cases even more.

I honestly don't use any of my knives hard--I just don't have the need. At the same time I use ALL my knives bar one that I bought 'cause I loved the look so much.
I routinely carry and use my Mnandi ($350) and my Koji Hara ($850) and my Sebenza ($325).

You must face the truth guys ,if you fell over in the street they would find you knifeless because some one would have gone thru your pockets before they call 000.:-))

i carry custom stuff all the time, right now mostly a emerson specwar CQC13, worth +$1100, probably more.

why not carry them?? if ya scuff them up ya can send them back to get refurbished, something ya cant do with most productions.

i was shocked when i sent my really beat up crawford kasper to get the lock fixed, pat said i outta go ahead and refurbish it, they made it look brand new, cost about $25 with shipping.

almost all of my customs have appreciated in value over the yrs, even with use, try that with a production knife.

I carry some of my expensive stuff, but not all of them. Some, like certain damascus blades, would just be pointless to use - there are less expensive knives that fulfill my needs better, so why not just leave them in the cabinet to look nice? :D

I carry alot of my nice stuff, including customs. I regularly have my GH, firetac, sebbie, etc alongside my mili or whatever else I am carrying. I tend to carry 2-3 knives including one which i dont feel bad about loaning out.

Everything I own gets carried at one time or another. It also happens that my more expensive knives are my EDCs, including a couple over $300. If I had the extra cash, customs would still be my EDCs, as I've never been able to keep a safe queen. Even a damascus and pearl or ivory knife would see carry, although not rough work.

I'll never buy a knife that I'm not willing to use hard (not abuse, just use hard)

I have to partially disagree with that. There are dress knives made for light cutting. It does not mean they are safe-queens, it just means they are not meant for camping and hunting.

Most would consider me well off however, I agonize over buying an $80 Moore Maker slip joint. I would never pay $1500 for a tactical knife design by the animators of Halo. Some of the most expensive firearms and knives are in pictures where the owner lives in an apartment...go figure.

I carry whatever is currently tripping my trigger be it a custom, production, or something in between. Of my customs my DDR GH, Snody Hybrid, and DDC one off SnG get the most pocket time but since I bought a Manix I don't carry anything else anymore cuz it'll do it all.:thumbup:

I'm also currently waiting for a sheath for my Busse AD which I'll start carrying sideways under my overshirt. Why buy them and not use them??:)

I only have one safe queen right now and it's a TAD/Elishewitz Dauntless. I'm not sure why but using it seems to be out of the question. Too pretty I guess.

They wouldn't find me dead out in the middle of nowhere. I would be alive because I would be using my quality knives (and guns). Besides I don't usually go to the middle of nowhere, I go to the other side of nowhere. They would be looking in the wrong place.

I use a Busse battle misstress for any heavy work and a large sebenza is my edc. I once collected Busse knives and never used them. I then decided I didn't want to have a lot of expensive knives around that I can't use so I traded off or sold all the safe queens and now only 5 busse's all different and all usable.

They'd find me with a Sebenza and perhaps a Kimber 1911.

I really don't think there can be a one-to-one comparison between an item that can be stamped out and have a handle molded on to even a very simple firearm that requires many more assembly and QC steps. $25 will buy you a functioning knife. You'd have to multiply that by ten to purchase an equivalent quality firearm.

Once you get past the point of purchasing enough of a tool to reliably do the job, you enter the realm of diminishing objective returns and increasing intangible rewards. Practically every time I use one of my Sebenzas it reminds me of the remarkable quality of the design and execution. I enjoy using fine tools as they were designed to be used.

I do not have the money to buy knives I don't use. My higher ($400+) knives ALL see normal use. I will sell or trade anything that does not get used.

Maybe we should have a ($400+) user knives picture thread? Proof that these higher end knives are in use.......;)

That is what the custom knife section is for.

I have no mercy on a mpf-1 and a smf on the regular. Also have a cqc-12 that's been through the ringer. I was lucky enough to score that one for just over $150 though. -Not so lucky on the other two. The days where I had knives just to admire without using are long behind me.

... if they found you dead one weekend out in the middle of nowhere, a victim of a massive coronary, would they find you with your Sebanza or some cheap beater? (Or perhaps both?)

If found under those circumstances I would more closely resemble the description I read somewhere of an old cowboy, "...a good Stetson on his head, expensive handmade boots on his feet, and fifty cents worth of rags in between." Of course I'd have a couple of old pocketknives in my jeans, too. Art is nice sometimes, but my knives are tools to be used and enjoyed, not hidden away and protected. If that makes my Douk-Douk or my Sodbuster or my Opinel a "cheap beater," then so be it. :D
