Recommendation? Experience with CS’s Aus8a steel?

Kinda “meh” to be honest. Sharpens easily to a screaming sharp edge, but loses that sharpness level in short order and is completely dull in a couple weeks when I used it.

I don't have any 4034 but four 4116 and although they work and cut! they really are not that good, aus8a is loads better IMHO. life is to short for crap applications of steel! it's 2021! my prolite is rock solid apart from being badly let down by the steel....

it's OK for non knife people... saying that I just remembered I have a butchers knife from cs and that seems a little better? maybe its a bit hit and miss with the ht but you really notice it when it isn't that great... its like the crap knife steel you remember as a kid with the fake Buck 110 folders from China!

Call me a Simpleton but I like CS's AUS-8.

I have a few of the Voyagers from when they were on AUS-8 close out and really like them. I'm not into pocket jewelry and the FRN handles CS did work great IMO. The FFG of the Voyagers work on everything I need a knife to do generally and AUS-8 is easy to being back to sharp; that's important for me.

My XL Voyager is in AUS-8, and I've used it for years. It always manages to sharpen easily to a very satisfying edge. Some years ago I knocked the very fine needle-like point askew when stabbing through multiple layers of cardboard atop a trash can lid. That has since been remedied.

I would not normally do this, but since you asked, you are a Simpelton. And I agree with you whole heartedly.

I had an aus8 large voyager, one of my first decent knives. It was razor sharp out if box. I liked it so much that I kept it pristine for some time until one day I decided to use it. Sliced cardboard just once and it's noticeably duller (though still sharp). I definitely put the steel to the lower end of decent knives nowadays available in the market. Won't buy any knife with this steel for more than $50.

As a fellow simpleton I can confirm - I’m liking it more the more I sharpen it. Which is a lot if I use it a lot in one day. But I think it’s good for beginners, too. I’m not crying when I mess up the edge on a $30 cold steel but I AM getting much better at sharpening. Hopefully by the time I need to sharpen my nicer/harder stuff, I’ll have some actual skills…

It’s just as good as any other aus8, maybe better. I do notice its harder to sharpen compared to me rat 1. Puts up a little more of a fight and Im using diamond stones.
I was thinkin about gettin one of they're Aus 10s...they're Aus 8 in my SRK is a winner
