experience with gear and kits

I think there is a lot to the idea of keeping it simple, too. I try to keep it to the few things I tend to use normally and will help me stay warm, dry and hydrated; and get found (water bottle; canteen cup; fire starting kit with fire steel, bic, commercial tinder; space blanket; para cord; mora knife; vic farmer; compass; whistle; and small first aid kit). Sometimes I'll add a baggie of trail mix and/or power bar. This assumes proper clothing for the season.

This is just my personal observation but maybe it'll help someone out. The best solution I have found for shelter(adequate shelter while still taking minimal space and weight into consideration) is a paracord bracelet and a space blanket (in original packaging). I won't go into how to make a shelter from it as that's been beat to death around here but my suggestion is to have 3 of space blankets. One to use and the other two in your shtf kit. In an emergency one goes around you and one is used to block the wind/rain. The 3rd one is the one you use for practice so that you get used to making a shelter with it.
