Experimental Handle for Firestarter

We finished this up over the weekend. It is an experimental set up for carrying a firestarter. We took our standard Backpacker model and drilled out a cavity just below the hidden tang that would accept a ferrocium rod. Then we added a simple "buttcap" to keep it in place. It keeps the rod out of the way and protected till needed. We will most likely do this set up on a different knife style when we return from Blade. The knife we used is more of a hunting knife and not intended for hard survival, but it is what we had around when the idea hit us. And it is something that could be really handy for the hunter that does not "plan" to be gone long. The experimentation continues.

I was going to try that with a mora, but It fell into the pile of other "to do" projects, that will probably never get done. I couldn't think of a way to keep it in there though, good work all around.

I was going to try something similar, but not with that buttcap style. Looks good! I think stashing a small one in the handle is a worthwhile project.

I'm thinking of doing one where the hole into the butt of the knife cuts through the lanyard hole, so that when the lanyard itself is in place the firesteel is held in place.

i would suggest attaching the firesteel to the cap so that it is all one piece...it would be easy to lose that little cap out in the woods trying to start a fire...

i would also suggest making the cap a little bigger...easier to grab and undo.

one last thing...perhaps attach a length of paracord through the cap into the lanyard hole...just in case it works loose somehow and falls. it will still be with the knife that way.

looks like a cool design though, something that could be very popular...

spooky, charles may has something very similar to your idea with the lanyard holding in the firesteel...:

Thanks for the solid feedback guys. Siguy, you pretty much nailed everything we have been thinking about. Especially attaching the rod to the cap.

You could make a cap that swivels over the hole and put a spring in the hole under the tang so the firesteel pops up a little and puts a little pressure on the cap to keep it from swinging open Then, when you slide it open the firesteel would pop up spring loaded.
Kinda like a dugou....uh.. nevermind.:D Oh man, Ive got an idea for a firesteel/ tinder holder now....:D
