Experimenting with backgrounds...

At the request of someone on this forum, I experimented a bit with a black background yesterday morning, using BATACLE #148 as the subject. Below are two photos. The first was taken a couple months ago, using my usual marbled white background. The second was taken yesterday, using a black background.

What do you guys think? I still refer the marbled white background, because it allows more details to be seen, particularly at the edges. The black background gives it more of an "artistic" feeling.

I think the white marbled back gives the knife a more three dimensional look.
But both are sweet!:thumbup::thumbup:

I'm no critic.... but the marbled background is definately a more detailed shot!!! IMHO But, gotta admit, both are well done!

You nailed it Ken, and I like them both. I would like to see the black done with some backfill lighting. Maybe a silver or white reflective panel @ the bottom of the shoot to bring the blade edge and lead of the slabs out of the shadows.

I agree. The black background makes for a great picture, but the whiter one allows the light to expose more places on the knife. In many places on these forums it wouldn't make a difference, but I think most Busse fans can appreciate seeing as much detail as possible.

yeah, the darker background for me also, I always thought the white was a bit bright.

hmm.. white does bring out the detail but the black stands the knife out as a whole.

hard to say which one i like better.

Ken,

Looking good!

My thinking was really when using the pics as a wallpaper. I find that darker wallpapers work best for me.

I dunno, maybe its a subjective thing, but when you're staring at a screen all day, I find a darker wallpaper makes for less eye-fatigue.

I go for the black, all you see is the knife. It is as if it appears out of the dark

More detail you have because of reflection from white background. If you put light directly to the side you will have same details. You are talking not about background but about light setup. From what I see in you case it includes not only lights but reflective wight background and also wight sealing which reflected in the edge - both contributes to super even wight light coming from all directions having knife lighten evenly as on passport or driver license photo.

It you lower one of you lamp to light from small angle to the side of the knife you will have all same details and even highlight side.

With this you may try different backgrounds, light or dark, textured differently and knife looks differently on that backgrounds ... with all details, I should add.

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. Try leather - Chaddy Bear followed my suggestion and I think it was big improvement.

Both are cool looking to me...
but the white marbled background definitely makes the details pop.

At first sight I liked the black, but with a closer look, I can see more knife detail so I settled on the white marble. It's all about the knife - right?

Reflective fill lighting is what will give all the detail back. With any background.

Wow, great shots... I've always been a fan of the white. The black would make a great desktop wallpaper though!! :)

Both are stunning Ken. But I found it refreshing to see your quality shots with a lighter background. Most people seem to choose for dark backgrounds.

Between the two I prefer the black because the white seemed too bright to me. For the black background shadow management (err controlling the light) is always the key factor, but I know I'm preaching to the choir on that one.

What I think might give the photo even more zing is to oil the handles and choose a background that complements or sets off the handle material.
