Well... The copper side ring has to go. I thought I had it so the first finger could go up and over the hilt in 'fencing' style.. but the copper ring makes it uncomfortable as well as providing no protection for that finger. So.. I will put the hilt in the forge to brake the braze bond. And go back to the drawing board. I think I will make a bit of a mini swept hilt by attaching a cross piece from the top quillon to the... arm that holds the ..blade ring? I need to see if there is terminology for all of this. This will be more clear later.
Okay. Big changes. After Steven got me to looking at Kevin Cashen's small sword.. I took the opportunity to look at other examples of his complex hilts. One of the aspects that's nice about his work ... which is not always present in the historical pieces.. are the clean lines of the hilt components. I feel like I mucked up my previous version with the file work. So on this version I've forged the quillons and the knuckle guard from a single piece and chose a different arrangement for the shape of the quillons themselves. This will be more organic and flowing. Now I need to decide if I want to salvage the previous 'blade ring' component.. or just ditch that idea and go with a basic side-ring like you see in some of the more simple side-swords.
After some clean-up:
edit: I may also be scaling that whole thing down. Could be the quillons and over-all mass are out of proportion with the blade. At least it looks like it in these pictures.
If I decide to keep the side-ring then I will have to break the current cyanoacrylate joint and replace it with something more permanent such as welding or brazing. I fear that this current arrangement will fail at the worst possible moment.
