Explain GEC to Me Please

I can see elements of the OP's complaint, though I do appreciate GEC very much and have owned many of their patterns. Early on they sorta overdid it by putting every blade configuration on that big cigar frame and calling it by another name. I think people want to see GEC make very conventional, conservative renditions of old patterns, just like Case, Queen and other companies do. GEC does not always conform to the letter of the law when making certain patterns. They shake it up a bit, and I like that. Though sometimes I agree that they miss the mark with certain cartoony patterns (Lumberjack, Whaler, Roughneck, French Kate, Templar), but I like that they stretch the old borders of what is defined as traditional.

OK, guys, thanks for all the input.
Bottom line is I want to try one to see their quality for myself.
Like I said earlier, looking for a Serpentine Stockman, or a single or double bladed
non-locking Trapper; with nice brown or amber jigged bone.
Can you find me something on all the sites.
Thanks,
Lenny

Lenny, I guess you can chalk it up to aesthetics being in the eye of the beholder. GEC has some pattern/material combinations that I find make a truly handsome knife. I also just bought one in kryptonite acrylic which I think looks neat but others think is a little too weird.
Some of the other styles aren't my cup of tea, but others here really enjoy them, so its all good.
Now one pattern I don't understand is the French Kate. Sure, it's a throwback to when seeing a bit of ankle was thrillingly naughty, and I'm sure when you pulled out your French Kate in the speakeasy, well 23 skiddoo, that meant you were a real player. But I think starting a "show us your French Kate EDC's" thread would be met with resounding silence.
And to take it even further is seeing the French Kate with the heavily gnarled stag scales. Ugh, I find it in appallingly bad taste, no offense to grannies everywhere.

Lenny, GEC has a list of dealers on their website. That's where I'd start. You can also cross check that with the dealers that support BladeForums listed here; http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/935876-***List-Of-Bladeforums-Dealers*** .

Let's keep our threads focused on the discussion of traditional knives, not vendors and their web sites.

Thanks,

What I like about GEC besides the great QC and strong build quality is they offer many patterns that haven't been around in a long time or quite somtime for some. I'm crazy about my humble collection so far! I know some may not like the diamond jigging on my #73 but that chocolate bone really has aged into some nice looking bone to my eyes! Sometimes in the right lighting it almost looks like amber bone though a little different.

Consider the 66 Calf Roper or for a Jack the 56 Dogleg in Amber Bone.
As for Trapper, why not check the thread for this year's Traditional Forum Knife? It will be a Trapper made by GEC.

How well do them bright orange handle slabs cut rope? don't forget,a knife is a tool. if the workin part isn't good, the handle slabs are just a chunk of bone. or in case's knives a piece of Frost Corelon.

The only GEC I own right now is last year's forum knife. An outstanding knife. I was resistant to GEC's when they first hit the market. They seemed too big and boxey, like the company was not capable of putting out a smaller knife for some reason.

However, they seem to be branching out with different patterns now, with some smaller and unique offerings. I still haven't seen alot that jumps out at me yet, but that is just my personal preference.

There is no doubt however, that they make a fine product.

Could you please take a picture of the #85 from top? To show the thickness of the scales, and maybe compare it with a SAK Pioneer or any other SAK you have? Thanks. :)

Art I can't upload any more images until our VZ runs out due to the modem box not working any longer. I have to use my mother inlaw's PC which has the outdated drive on it. We do get to keep paying VZ for service we no longer have for 6 months unless we choose to renew! Talk about burning your bridge with me!!! Any hoow this is the back spring side. It's a just slightly thicker, in bone it would be a little closer, but either way I don't think you would notice the difference.

Hello Art,
I bought a GEC 85 in burnt stag from KSF. I very much like this knife.... However... It is not an EDC for me have it does have some bulk to it. It's a no go with nice thin wool trousers. Weight and bulk put the screws to that lest women think I'm packing ..... nah not going there..... "is that a GEC in your pocket?... Or are". Weekend carry. Heck yeah! In a pair of jeans or cargo shorts.... Not only comfortable pocket carry.... But great in hand. Meaty...substantial... without being over the top. Really feels great in the hand. I did have an issue with main blade denting on the liner .... But Christine took care of that for me pronto. Absolutely in my rotation ....like butta in your hand.

I find the colors to be fine

this one shines outside, pic seems dull but when I look at it with some sunlight it shines

same here, seems black but it's more yellow with some black

fit and finish is very high most of the time, it's better than case for sure as case rounds everything in the polishing process
gecs have more defined angles, are more straight but I actually "prefer it"
gecs HT is very good, knives cut longer and are easier to maintain than case, case is fine but gecs HT make the most out of the steel

still carry, use, buy case but its different
