I had been telling my daughter about all of the animal sign I have been finding in the area I am working in lately, and showing her some of the photos, so she wanted to go see it too. We haven't hung out together as much as I like lately due to my work load. So yesterday I took the day to go hang out with her and explore the area together, and work on her wilderness skills some.
The area starts in a poplar stand about 5 miles into the forest. It is one of her favorite areas to go hiking in.
Mostly hiking, so just basic gear, food for snacks, and a first aide kit in the packs.
She wandered around while I got things together and sent off a couple of emails.
Then we headed out down the road they have made in the course of doing some logging in the area.
The Bobcats are making a comeback it seems, glad to see that.
There were rabbit tracks also
As well as some that enjoy the taste of rabbit....
As we walked along she spotted some deer tracks and noted the small size
She was really excited to spot what she was sure were more Bobcat tracks and scat, and though it's a bit distorted I think she is right.
We had a visitor
About a mile and a half in we made it back to the area where the logging was going on. She counted the rings on some of the stumps and climbed around on some of the larger tree tops.
She spent a lot of the day practicing with her fire steel, I think she is getting the hang of it now
By then it was late afternoon and we were getting hungry, so we made our way to one of the camping areas to make use of one of the fire pits for a fire starting lesson and to roast hot dogs. She whittled a hot dog stick from a branch from a broken tree top, helped me gather firewood, and then we ate and talked about the woods and the wildlife.
She practiced her featherstick making on another green limb from the broken down tree while we talked. Green wood is easier to work with so I thought why not, we can work on seasoned wood after she gets the hang of it better.
Soon the shadows were getting long, the sun was setting, and it was time to put the fire out and head home. It sure was a nice change of pace. I always enjoy hanging out with her, and talking about life.
