I had been telling my daughter about all of the animal sign I have been finding in the area I am working in lately, and showing her some of the photos, so she wanted to go see it too. We haven't hung out together as much as I like lately due to my work load. So yesterday I took the day to go hang out with her and explore the area together, and work on her wilderness skills some.

The area starts in a poplar stand about 5 miles into the forest. It is one of her favorite areas to go hiking in.

Mostly hiking, so just basic gear, food for snacks, and a first aide kit in the packs.

She wandered around while I got things together and sent off a couple of emails.

Then we headed out down the road they have made in the course of doing some logging in the area.

The Bobcats are making a comeback it seems, glad to see that.

There were rabbit tracks also

As well as some that enjoy the taste of rabbit....

As we walked along she spotted some deer tracks and noted the small size

She was really excited to spot what she was sure were more Bobcat tracks and scat, and though it's a bit distorted I think she is right.

We had a visitor

About a mile and a half in we made it back to the area where the logging was going on. She counted the rings on some of the stumps and climbed around on some of the larger tree tops.

She spent a lot of the day practicing with her fire steel, I think she is getting the hang of it now

By then it was late afternoon and we were getting hungry, so we made our way to one of the camping areas to make use of one of the fire pits for a fire starting lesson and to roast hot dogs. She whittled a hot dog stick from a branch from a broken tree top, helped me gather firewood, and then we ate and talked about the woods and the wildlife.

She practiced her featherstick making on another green limb from the broken down tree while we talked. Green wood is easier to work with so I thought why not, we can work on seasoned wood after she gets the hang of it better.

Soon the shadows were getting long, the sun was setting, and it was time to put the fire out and head home. It sure was a nice change of pace. I always enjoy hanging out with her, and talking about life.

Thank you Bill, glad you enjoyed the post! Yes, Ed makes awesome knives. He is retiring this year so I wanted to grab a few before they became harder to get. Since we are starting to get more serious with her skills lessons I really like her having a knife with a guard. She surely is, way too fast! Hard to believe she will soon be eleven.

Excellent post. Great to see you out there with your daughter.

Thank you Blaine. I try to get out with her as often as I can, we always have a blast.

Another EXCELLENT post. Thanks for sharing. Nice relationship between father and daughter. Congratulations!

Thank you Hunter, I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I have / had the same relationship with my oldest daughter also and it's both a blessing and a curse now that she is grown, married, and has a child of her own. A blessing for all the time I got to spend with her out and about, and a curse for how much I miss it these days when between our jobs and our families we have difficulty just arranging a coffee date. I m acutely aware of how fast this time will pass, so I am getting in as much quality time as I can now :)

You are absolutely right Brian... The time is passing very fast and we as parents HAVE to exploit every single moment with our children...
I have read many of your posts describing / showing - amongst various tools - unique moments with your family, very precious moments... I am really enjoying these posts. Thanks and congratulations, again!

Oh definitely. Sadly I missed a lot of time with my oldest due to having a wife who refused to help in any way financially and working so many hours just to make all the ends meet. This time around I got a second chance with a better woman and I am going to exploit it as much as I can while I have the chance and am able to do so. The time really does fly by.

New martin looking awesome

Oh man, I am totally digging the Bushfighter! My favorite Martin knife to date. At 9 inches overall, half blade half handle, with these grinds and handle contours it is a bushcraft knife with a LOT of attitude and that is exactly what I needed :D

Great pics, and looks like an excellent time out!

Thanks T! Yeah, it was awesome. I wish we could do it again next weekend but I have to work...

I wish to you ALL THE BEST, Brian! Enjoy the special moments, really wonderful moments with your "little-one"! And keep us informed with your reviews...

S35VN , she's being spoiled ! Sure has a good collection of tools .Good way to raise her !

Yes, I suppose she is being a bit spoiled...my friend John Hutcheson, who has been making knives for about 40 years now, set the tone for that when he gave her first knife to her about 5 years ago. Her first knife was hand made of D2, with desert ironwood, mosaic pins, and a soldered brass guard. I originally bought that Runt for me as more of an edc knife, but then as I started stepping up her studies and lessons I really liked the idea of her having a tough knife in a good stainless for our area and a guard to protect her hand, so I've loaned her my Runt till I can have Ed make her's. Ed is retiring this year and slowing down on the knife making, so I had to move a little quicker on this than I normally would have. I am having him make her one with a handle color more girly so any future boy friends won't want to borrow it and tun off with it :D

awesome pics, brian! your daughter is growing up fast...and i see she still loves to climb :)

great post sir. Good to see folks still teaching their kids. great knives too. I have a bushcraft of theirs and love it.

My daughter is only 4 but I long to do this with her. I take on small hikes but I must be careful because if I take her to far in I gotta carry her out as her endurance & patience are limited.
