External frame backpacks?

I don't do much backpacking anymore, and only have an old gregory pack. some friends and hiking budies use external frames for really heavy loads. Through a toddler on top between the frame and neck. Like all things, pros and cons to all. nothing wrong with any dana designs. If they put it out, it is good. Others sware by terraplanes. ymmv. No matter what maker, I would try it out with your intended load....

I have one of the Carsons I have never used and a Kelty 4300 I've used a lot.

One of the things I like about them is you can set the straps wider where on most internals the shoulder straps won't move.

The thing with me is I've lightened up enough to where 4300 is too much room. Still use it in the winter though when I carry bulky clothes.

Somebody talked about getting your sleeping bag wet having it strapped on the outside. One word. Garbage bags.

I worked as a guide for a few years and I must say... pros and cons with both types and I have come to realize that there is a time and place for both. In warmer climates i tent to prefer an external frame. I know many of the new packs "circulate air" but not nearly as well as an external. However the internal that fits closer is so much nicer in a colder climate. Alot of people are all into the ability of an external frame pack being "modular" but in my book is very over rated. I personally favor an internal pack that has the panel loading ability. Most of my items are then broken down into color coded stuff sacks. I Always keep the heavier items lower and closer to my back. And make sure to use the compression straps on the bag to limit movement of the items. Alot of people also are on the train of thought that an external frame pack is easier to repair. Well I always carry a sewing kit and duct tape so Internal or external....they are both par for repair however I have NEVER had a failure of the internal frame stays versus several failures from and external frame. But this is the same argument as 9mm vs. .45 or glock vs 1911. Everybody has their opinion so basically Pick what works best for you... Pack some form of repair equipment( duct tape) and educate yourselves before you head out to the particular region you will be in.
