External switch for VFD HZ jumper?

Apologies if this has been covered, but has anyone tried to add an external SPDT switch that controls the hertz jumper inside the VFD from 1X to 2X?
Is anyone 100% certain that this jumper setting has to stay fixed while power is applied?
