I'm having a lot better luck now that I am useing the 8.5" ceramic rods. Mine were not very dull to start with but the rods conform to the curves of the khuk a lot easier. Hope the idea helps a bit.
Not long ago, I couldn't understand how people got their knives "shaving sharp", but now I know what it is to have "hair fly off my arms". If my forearms were like a forest, tracks on it have been cleared for khukuri landing sites.
After doing what Uncle Bill advised, the following sites offer more info:
Thanks guys! --- I picked up a red (fine) diamond sharpener for now; there was no ceramics where I got it. Got a darn good edge on the 15" Ang Khola. As far as shaving sharp my 12" Sirupati is like a razer and I never had to sharpen it.
That is just about all I have ever had to do with any of my HI khuks, touch up. Most of the other knives that I have seen for sale every where are stainless and the edge is ground on them and they feel pretty sharp. I have only been able to check a couple in hand but the edges felt rough to me. You don't by many carbon steel knives any more that don't cost you a fortune so I have nothing to compare to there.
What things boil down to for me is; I am prefectly satisfied with the blades I get from HI, so I don't need any thing else. When the khuk is too big the karda is always present. And, I only have one fo those that doesn't do too well. All the others sure do carry their own weight.
