How do ER knives compare to other "hard use" knife companys like ZT, strider, etc... ? are they a good value for what you get? thoughts on the company and their knives?

I've got the two big folders, Nemesis and MPC, and the smallest folder, BF-1 is the designation, I think. All very heavy duty, with the BF-11 too small for that to mean much. :)

I just got a k9 fixxed blade i love ,looking for two folders and a harpoon and i think they are beautiful very well built, i have two zt300's striders and hinderer and i think that extrema ratio's are becomming my favorite knifes fixxed and folders great design very heavey duty and just feels great in your hand but i like a bigger heavier knife (smf over the sng) so get one and they seem to sell way under retail so very good value

Speed of deployment? What are you planning, a knife fight?
Just smack the guy with the closed knife and he's out cold.

aa forumite of the italian MCKF forum tested an ER vs the USMC, the er did not break but performad bad and was an ugly competitor

the N690Co steel is NOT a hard use steel, it's maybe only good for cutting, but no hard use

the only "good" thing of ER is the marketing strategy, the rest is pure crap, do not waste your money, we say it after heavy testing on ERs and n690 knives and we have plenty in italy
N690 is no heavy duty steel and the geometry, tratment of ER are very poor quality, they are not what they look and cost 3-10x more than they're worth, I know them well being italian, do not waste your money on them, marketing and publicity are one thing, quality and REAL reliability are something else
we tested both the steel and the knives, there's way better in quality and material/craftsmanship ( and of cours, price)

one thing is look, one thing is the result of REAL use, want a folder get a ZT want a Fixed, BRKT and Rat ( or busse etc..)

before someone says something, in our forum we test and use camp knives deeply as we like them, and the idea of the steel and the company we got is very far from good, don't waste your money, iven for the tactical crappy look

cheers from Italy

Mad_Maxx's comments are completely at variance with my own experience, and others have also vouched for N690 as an excellent steel.

The ER knives tend to have thick blades with obtuse edges. This will degrade cutting performance, but if slicing is your goal, the edge can be thinned.

I would like to know specifically which tasks the knives failed at.

I have 3, the MPC, MPO, and fulcrum II.

The MPC is my favorite, despite its gigantic size, was actually my EDC for almost a year. Has by far the most useful glass breaker on the butt end. Heck, glass breaker? You could throw the knife through the glass you want to break. The butt end could destroy brick. And would definetly hurt if struck on the face!

The heavy duty folders aren't designed to be expert slicers-the medium and light series are better.

As far as hard use, I can't imagine breaking my MPC on anything. But I also can't imagine breaking my tenacious, I just don't do silly things with my tools.

I had no problems with their blade steel, and they aren't the only company that uses it.

Comparing to ZT and strider, the fulcrum didn't break in the same destruction test that a GB did, but lost overall in the testers rating due to slicing, grip, edge retention.

But not even that test really tells one anything..comparing my ERs to my two striders, they are very different knives made out of different materials, all are heavy enough duty for extreme tasks.

If you want something different, pick one up.

Could get much better folders for the same amount of money.

Google "+bladeforums +Extrema-ratio" to find out more discussion on this.

I personally don't mind the steel so much but it's everything else that I'm not too keen about.

Get a Zero Tolerance 300 series. Very good value for money and it is stronger and with better steel as well. I recommend Cold Steel over Extrema Ratio for strength and value for money.

Now here's where "subjective" comes in. I find the Nemesis/MPC handle suits my grip far better than the hotspots of the ZT 300.

I pay retail sometimes. RARELY for these heavy-duty, big-ticket knives. Value for how much money?

Handle ergos fit different people differently I see. Well I speak for myself then.

Value for money is you could get a ZT200 for half the price for example. Though value for money is different for different people. I mean it is fairly recently I found out some people pay thousands for a folder for example.

I have a ZT0200.

I didn't pay MSRP for any of my ER's.

I know, I have read it somewhere before. That's why I used it as an example :)

I too will never pay MSRP for a folder if possible. I was lucky in EBay and got my ERs for a relatively decent price. I cannot deny the saber grind 1/4 thick blades are not great cutters. I will also speak/write honestly my opinion about what I feel is horrible ergos, weak lock (In my own experience and assessment of their design) and relatively high price. Because I wish I had read something like my current opinions before I bought the ERs. It would have saved me lots of cash. :p

I haven't seen the ER folders, but I handled all the FB's at Blade show several years back. I was underwhelmed. Their advertising was pretty sorry mall ninja stuff too. I haven't seen any of their new stuff, but I like the ZT's better anyways.

I know. I've been lusting after a ZT100 for a while now. No luck in the 2nd hand market.

The ZT500 is good value for money. Tough as nails and great design. Better choice for your hard earned cash.

If you are talking fixed blades (I know more about them then I do about folders) then ER warranty wasn't close to strider or busse or other manufacturers that will replace or fix you blades no questions asked.

If you want a folder with a secondary locking mechanism, then ER is your only choice.

Their knives are very "military" in design and construction. Some people desire those traits, some don't.

Chances are, you will never see anyone else with one of these knives. If you aren't a herd animal, these knives might fit you.
