I am not as up to speed on customs as I would like to be, but know that there are a bunch out there. What would you guys think are some of the custom folders out there, that are tough as hell, and made with high end materials? Looking to maybe get a really nice blade for next year, and there will be a wait. Thanks in advance guys, Josh

With the caveat that I am NOT a real knife guy the glib comment that a "folder is a broken knife" does make me think. I have never broken a folder and other than my original Western sheath knife that I abused as a yout' while learning to throw have had excellent service from knives owned.

All that to say this IF I had a need for an extreme use knife and could only have one(1), it would probably be a fixed blade.

Do have a ZT550 and a Tops/Buck -TSAR-T I suspect would hold up to any likely extreme use this old 75 yr could generate.

Best.

How about this "extreme" use folder picked up this weekend. Reese Weiland (RW mark). This was a must have. The thickest flipper/slasher I have ever seen. Blade is just under 4" with a finished thickness of 3/8". Handles are Ti. Bearing pivot system to boot. The bali is shown for size comparison.

it depends on what level of extreme we're talking here. as we all know, as the extreme level goes up, so do the number of Xs in the spelling.

for instance that ridiculously thick straight edge posted above me is at least at the exxxtreme level, or possibly the Xtreme level (removing the e is the equivalent of two Xs added to the spelling)

but it depends what I'm doing with the knife what level of extreme I need. if I need to take it out of the safe to take a picture next to a pistol it needs to be at least exxtreme. if it will be seen in a photo with an AR or AK based rifle I'll grab my Xtreme level folder out of its climate controlled cabinet where it's stored in a lint free cloth. I will probably reach for that same level if I'm going to my shopping mall's food court to keep a vigilant eye on the sheeple.

if I'm just doing something easy like hacking through tree limbs, preparing dinner in the wild, cutting large quantities of rope on the job, and other really easy tasks I don't need anything at all extreme and will probably just use a thin spyderco.

The problem is, although there are custom folders out there rated for 'extreme use', 99% of them will never be subject to it. By their nature, being a custom folder usually means that they're unique and hard to replace. Customized productions, production versions of customs, or Mid techs, that's where it's at.

Define "extreme"?

Are you talking about penetration capability, or being used as a prybar? You can get a solid folder that will absolutely go through any body armor short of "stab proof" for under $100 bucks.

That is a crazy looking knife metlman1! Is it a utility blade or a pocket cleaver? Almost like the reverse side of engineering a straight razor.

I agree 100%. Most of the really high end customs are never used in an abusive way and thus not tested, leaving the actual performance capability unproven. You have to have high enough numbers to prove out QC and customs by definition can't meet that criteria.

I would trust a Cold Steel Rajah lll, Spartan, etc. In fact when I want to have a tool I can get medieval with but can't carry a fixed blade I back up my Spyderco Delica with a Cold Steel Rajah lll.

What kind of extreme use are you talking about OP? I've never liked the look of Coldsteel knives (many of them are too tactical looking for me, and I don't like the videos they make), but they do a great job on AUS8 steel. Their triad lock seems to be really freaking tough. Most of their knives are pretty damned tough too.

+1 on the Grayman Satu/Dua.... Held one this weekend...

If there was a tank in front of me, I could probably chop it down for ya. ;)

If you are lucky you can try to get a Andrew Demko AD10. Also XM18 Hinderer or have Alan Davis make you one the way you want it. His knives are tough and have zero blade play! Good Luck! Kevin :D:thumbup:

Look up Direware custom knives. I've never handled one, mind you, but the designs, materials, and looks of the knives are disgustingly awesome.

Smatchet!

Now that it's been said, I'm staying out of this thread, although Marcinek should be along eventually :p.

Have fun, guys!

You can get a heavy duty folder without spending too much. You would be more willing to put it through the ringer anyway. All the knives mentioned should cut it, along with most any of the ZT models or a BM Adamas. Pick the one you find the most appealing to you.
