I don't know about the rest of you but my 50 year old eyes don't like to see up close anymore. While grinding it can be a pain not being able to focus on the edge.

I went looking for a pair of safety glasses that also magnify and found some on the internet for a good price but also found them at the Local Lowes for $13 and picked some up.

What a difference it makes having both saftey and magnification all in one

I use those also and really like them. The only problem is when you wear a respirator the magnification part is too high on your eye and they are not good to look away or walk around with. Still very good for grinding, filing ect though.

As much as I hate to admit it, them look like just what I need.

I hear you brother.

Just came in from the shop and life was a bit easier. When I needed the magnifcation it was there automatically. No more fumbling with the Optivisor

I use them also and they work great. Just as long as your eyes are not bad enough to need the magnification all the time. Enco and MSC have them on sale from time to time, like $5.99 each.

I have to use them too (2.5X). I just wish I could find better quality ones that don't make me feel so fish-eyed. Anyone know where to get glass ones, that wouldn't scratch up so easily? I still have to use optivisors (4X, I believe) for real close work though. Heck, I even get cheeters in my sunglasses, if I can find them.

I tried those from Lowes just like you got there and could not get used to the danged bifocals, I would feel like I was walking on clouds while walking across the shop! I went back to my old reader glasses I know they are not safety glasses and that worry's me all the time. I keep an old pair in the shop and as soon as I start grinding and such I grab them because the sparks ruin the lenses.

I wish I could just find safety magnifiers with out the bifocals ! You know just like readers but made like a safety glass. I mostly buy the 1st or 2nd level of reader because anything else makes my eyes worse after a few minutes!

I just use my readers too Dixie, but as you know it is NOT enough protection...not by far! Better walking on a cloud than in the dark.

^ How about a face shield? Good protection, fit over a respirator, fit over glasses.

+1 for Hesparus, I've recently begun to prefer a face shield also. Whether grinding, turning bed posts on the wood lathe or whatever, I get better visibility than with safety glasses and I can use my everyday bifocals and respirator under the face shield.

Boy do I hear that Phil! My dad use to have the same problem and when he started wearing glasses I would hear him cuss about them. I use to think Oh they can't be that bad or yeah they are, they even worse now that I wear them. They are constantly dusty, sliding down or some infernal thing! Glasses just purely suck but it's even worse when they are not working for you! Damn I hate that my eyes have gotten this way.

There should be safety glasses that are magnifiers only.
The bifocals do not work for me! My darn neck begins too hurt before long from trying to get them right! If I were standing in one place only it might be different but that's hard to do when working on a knife!

As for the shield, OK so I guess I got to say this I am one of those people that can put a face shield down and before I turn around good it is fogged. I have that problem often with just the glasses under some conditions. I have got to where I basically need the glasses even to weld and I will strike up an arc and before I can get to the end of the bead I am Brailling it, if the glasses fog if you know what I mean!

Some one PLEASE tell me that there is a some where a coating that you can put on glasses to stop them from fogging that really works because so far I have not found one!
It is almost impossible for me to wear a dust mask. As soon as I put one one on it causes my glasses to begin to fog. I have the same problem with the respirator and it always makes afraid I am actually going to screw up and put my hands in the wrong place.:grumpy:

All I can say is that it all makes me maintain the attitude that GOD does have a sense of humor, that's why we have good eyesight when were young and clueless about what we are looking for!:D

My face shield fogs when I tilt it down to far and it's too close to my mouth. Tilting it back a little bit helps a bunch.

I would like to find a pair in +2 mag.

I am enjoying these new ones though. Now I can stop hitting my optivsor on the grinder...lol

Thanks Adam. Off to Lowe's I go. Although I wonder if my prescription bifocals don't already do this job! lol

I had to go to the LOWES on Grove and the 60fwy. They have a stand in the tool section and they are hanging on the back in their own little box display.

I use them too. Got two pair at a going out of business sale at the Black & Decker outlet store.

If you can find an optometrist who deals American Optical safety glasses products you can get safety glasses
in reader glasses proscriptions, as well as prescription welding glasses. Sadly, most optometrist will have no idea
of what you are talking about, but you might find one who sells glasses to people working in industry like big ship yards etc.

I've only been trolling for a day since I just got interested in knife making. I saw your request and thought this would be a good first post. In my younger years I played paintball and we had the same problem with our goggles fogging up. I would swear by a product called FogDoc which you can find online via google. It's 5.99 for a small jar that will last for quite a while. It's easy to apply to the inside of the lenses and works wonders. Occasionally you will have to reapply it if you are often wiping the inside of the lenses. I use it on all my safety & sun glasses. I'm not in any way affiliated with the company, just a satisfied user.
