I favor Eze lap sharpening products the best. I just picked up a set of three sharpeners, med. fine and extra fine. Also a coarse sold by it's self. They are a plastic handle with about a 3/4" by 2" sharpening surface. The plastic is pliable, not stiff. It's great for hand sharpening convex edges.

Scott, what is your method for hand sharpening convex knives with a hard backed stone? I am familiar with the mouse pad method as that is what I use but am unaware of this method.
 
In the pic it shows how I field sharpen. Start at the plunge and sharpen to the point away from the edge, rolling off the edge. just just don't go to steep or you'll round the edge. It takes some practice.

That I'll have to see in person Scott at one of our Gatherings. What's the set run? And what is your opinion on using diamond stones on blades regularly? I've heard some chatter that they prematurely wear the blade down vs just regular sharpening stones/ceramics.

Honestly, I rarely hand sharpen. I've been spoiled having a belt grinder.:D If you properly sharpen a knife, keep it sharp, I can't see wearing it out. Just don't let it get dull to begin with. Power sharpening if done improperly will wear a blade down quick. High hardness and wear resistant steels like D2 are easier to maintain with a diamond hone. Heat treated and tempered D2 even wears grinding belts out fast.
Those sharpeners run around 12 to 15 bucks.

I've used those for years, they do a great job. They can make softer steels disappear quick but that's an advantage if your technique is good.
